I know it's not normal, but want to see how serious others would take this, who have more experience with this:

total chol 218
LDL (calculated; not measured) 128 (!!!)
HDL 64
Triglycerides 130
VLDL (calc'd) 26

Total Chol/HDL ratio 3.4

AutoRX it, stat. SuperTech for rinse, as long as the price stays low. Some good runs on the highway, 30 min 3x week should help clear that up.

Good luck!

are you suggesting statins, and a 30 min run 3x week? HEHE

Those numbers aren't too bad. I'm not a doctor, but from what I've looked into the Total Cholesterol and LDL are a little high, the Triglycerides look normal, and the HDL and Chol/HDL Ratio are rather good. You should ask your doctor for a copy of the test report which will show the normal range for each item, and discuss any out of range results with him/her. There is also a lot of information on the web for each test that explains their significance and relationship.

yeah i know the ref numbers, actually:

only abnormalities are:
total chol: 218 (up to 200 normal) so 218 is considered "borderline high"
and LDL 128 (up to 99 normal) : "high"

However the LDL was not a direct measure, but calculated based on HDL/total chol (i guess)...

I guess I shouldn't worry too much; gonna have a talk with the doc.

How old are? How much do you weigh and how tall are you?

Do you smoke?

How have your deceased male relatives come to an end?

All risk factors...

Do you have unprotected sax at 212 mph in a Corvair, wearing a flaming bisphenol impregnated protection suit with a bottle of gin in one hand and a hypodermic in the other?

Just curious.

Yeah Pablo is correct you need to look at other factors! Not much to worry about IMO. There are some studies that show men are healthier with a cholesterol around 230 to 240. Plus take a look at the bottom of the commercials for all the statin drugs. Please read the fine print! Pretty interesting!

NO history of hrt disease, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, etc

sax? every day; j/k :) NO

IMO you have nothing to worry about. Not having diabetes is great! Thats a huge risk factor! Sugar is worse for you than fat! You can live without sugar and actually be healthier but you will be very ill and can die without fat!

At least he doesn't have an enlarged heart like me. I am pretty much waiting for the moment I collapse and meet my maker as there is no way to really help the condition.

Enlarged heart = screwed.

Total and LDL are high (should be under 200 and 100), but I sure would like to have your HDL. My HDL was in the 20s and is only in the 30s now with 2000 mg of niacin every day!

Don't know what VLDL is.

Is there a reason that you got a blood test? Or was this part of a physical or something?

I can't answer your question but my sister got her blood tested as part of a physical and I think her cholesterol was kind of close to yours and the doctor just told her to be aware of it because it was slightly high.

I am assuming this was your first abnormal test? If so remember this is only one test! Just like a UOA you would not do something drastic if everything looked good in one test except one element right? So I would say to keep an eye on it, look for other symptoms, and get tested again at some point.

TallPaul: (this is from the MayoCLinic.com)

Very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol is one of the three major types of lipoproteins. The other two are high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. Each type contains a mixture of cholesterol, protein and triglyceride, but in varying amounts.

LDL contains the highest amount of cholesterol. HDL contains the highest amount of protein. VLDL contains the highest amount of triglyceride, a blood fat. Like LDL cholesterol, VLDL cholesterol is considered a type of "bad" cholesterol because elevated levels are associated with an increased risk of coronary artery disease.

97Tbird: don't sweat it. Some of the number are "elevated," some normal. As mcrn said, this is just one test. I'd want to see a trend over three or four fasting blood tests before I took any action. And before I began taking any prescription statin, I'd certainly try modifying my nutrition intake and amping up the exercise if those are two areas you have neglected. Your family history is a plus for you. Relax and enjoy life.
