How aggressive is the Start/Stop in your vehicle?

The next time I buy a new vehicle one of the things I will look for is how easy it is to disable . I want no part of start/stop technology .
If it's a gm you only have to press the button on every drive. Though i wish i could permanently have it off and would have to press it to turn it on instead. It's all module controlled and the software in the radio ought to let the owners make their pick. Sometimes i forget but if the ac comp is on it won't stop until the cabin is cooled enough.

I had my first experience with start/stop recently. Went to visit my parents for a week and was given a Malibu to drive while I stayed with them. I’m not sure what year it was tbh but it had 150k miles on it. I actually didn’t know it had start/stop until I was driving it for a bit. You have to really press on the brake hard for it to do it’s thing which made it kind of weird since it only did it very often for me. When it did stop and restart it was fine if I wasn’t driving aggressive but when I was trying to get going in a hurry it would shutter a bit on initial acceleration.

If it were my car I would probably disable it but if I were forced to live with it I could manage.

Worse than the stop start which can be turned off, my wife's '22 BMW X1 drops out of gear when stopped, and sometimes it happens right before you stop moving, making the stop rough. I'm even more annoyed after watching the video posted above showing almost no fuel savings going into neutral. Maybe it's decoupling the transmissions mechanical pump and using the ASS auxiliary transmission pump like the ASS does.

I just don’t see how Start/Stop could save enough fuel over the life of a car to make it all worth it. I’m always open minded to new things, but I just can’t see it when it comes to this.
I think the view that the car manufactures are pressing is not single ownership it's Global ownership to save fuel and emissions.

08w oils are also part of the whole admission fuel saving umbrella.

But the real question is as a consumer would be the longevity of these engines. It appears new cars today are somewhat consumable and insurance companies do not put a lot of mileage on certain engines.

Neither of our vehicles have it. The SRT, well, because there's no pretense that it's in any way geared toward efficiency and the RAM 1500, we specifically bought one without e-Torque, I had zero interest in owning anything with Start/Stop. Even my parent's new Grand Cherokee with the 5.7L doesn't have it.

I had to go into the city today and got caught up in a traffic jam. Along side of me was a Jeep Grand Cherokee. It was comical to hear that poor engine do it's stop start every four feet for two miles.

Here we go again. Look up how long start/stop has been used in the F150s.

Get back to us on here.

I have two vehicles with start stop, the Cayman, and the Stelvio.

The Cayman gives you about 3 seconds after you come to a stop, and put it into neutral before it will shut down.
It will not stop if your left foot still has the clutch engaged.
And there's a billion different monitors that will prevent the car from activating the shut off sequence.

The Stelvio likes to shut itself off the instant after it comes to a full stop.
It has about 25 different parameters that it watches to see if it should disable the start stop sequence.
The Stelvio also has the worst IBS system on the planet, and prefers to not charge the car's battery more than it does like to charge the battery, so you could quickly find yourself running around town on a battery in the 60 to 70% SOC range, and now you're in lots of stop and go traffic.

I let them do their things, unless I need to make a quick left turn in a busy intersection with the Stelvio.
The Cayman always starts the moment I touch the clutch pedal, so that's never an issue, and it's a n/a car, so I don't have to worry about turbo lag on a sketchy left turn situation, unlike the Stelvio.

I don't think my 2015 F150 is too bad. I'm pretty good at manipulating the brake pedal to make it work when I want it to. My Dad's "new" '21 Honda Passport isn't quite as smooth as my F150, but it's not awful. The worst one I ever experienced was in a 2017(?) Chevy Cruze. Good Lord, it was awful. No way to disable it, that was aware of anyway. Drove that car about 1000 miles round trip on a vacation and wow, was it bad.

Stop/start in the Jeep Wrangler is my first car with this feature.

It shuts down the engine only at a complete stop. And the engine will restart if it’s a long stop. So it’s mild and not so aggressive. I can usually prevent it from activating by lightly applying the brakes and letting up and reapplying so the Jeep is stopped but no active stop by the computer.

I don’t mind it actually. I know my mom is annoyed by her Mini Cooper’s aggressive stop/start so much so that she manually deactivates it when she uses it.

I’ve had this feature in rentals and I think BMW (and Mini by extension) are aggressive vs. FCA vehicles. 🤷‍♂️
I don’t find it to be all that aggressive in my Wrangler either, though I only use it when I forget to turn it off or my wife drives it. My main issue is that it doesn’t allow a full engine warm up before beginning to do the stop/start cycle.

My '24 Mustang will shut off before I hit a complete stop, maybe at like 1/2 mph, if the clutch is out and in N.

I've rented a lot of vehicles over the past three years, in all honesty the stop/start system sucked in each one of them. I gave it the benefit of the doubt and tried it, then disabled it because it annoyed the hell out of me. I will be certain next the new car I buy I will get the device to disable it and install it at the dealership if possible. Flame suit on.

So many time in our trafic here a car shuts off the 20 seconds later has to start.
I hate start stop and I don't even own one

^^^^ I completely agree with your assessment on start-stop systems. My first experience with S/S was in 2022 with a new Hyundai Sante Fe rental in Boston. I drove it for 3 miles out of Logan airport and thought the transmission was broken each time I stopped at a red light. It felt like I had put it in neutral, revved the engine to 1500 RPM and quickly shifted into drive! I returned to Enterprise and told the attendant the transmission was slamming into 1st gear. He laughed and explained that was just the start-stop system and showed me how to disable the function. I kept the rental for a week, but cursed the S/S every time I forgot to disable it.

Exactly. We travel with friends, husband and wife who like us own older vehicles w/o SS. Long story short I always drive the rental. On two occasions I was asked what's wrong with the car. My canned response is the P-S [fill in the blank] has stop/start and I didn't disable it. LOL

A couple toothpicks and diagonal cutters.
No more stop-start in my 2024 Tucson.
