Well, I needed to replace the timing belt on my 2001 Focus DOHC "Zetec" motor.

I bought this as a work car and have driven 115K miles myself on it. It only had 11K when I bought it.

I started it on Supertech (wpp) when I first owned it.. after a few months, went to Advance Auto's WU variety for a year, then onto Federated's Amalie and now their WPP.

To set the cams you have to remove the valve cover... it's the first time the engine has had this done. It was absolutely spotless clean... no dirt, no sludge, no varnish.

Looks like the poor man's oil is up to par.

Did you use the the cam bar and timing pin tools? My valve cover was leaking so killed two birds with one stone.

I'm in progress, but yes, I have the cam bar and crank pin.

Normal OCI is 4-5K miles. Posting a pic is more work than I care to do... but it's pristine under there.

I'm not sure who, but either Mazda or Ford has a good engine design. I don't think they have an engine on the sludgers list like Chrysler, Toyota, VW and Audi have.

I recently found a $10 mail in rebate on a major brand oil but it's limited to 1 rebate per street address. So after I've used that I won't hesitate running a house brand, maybe Pep Boys brand, Proline.

I run a mix of city and highway. It's used to fix computers on call and make deliveries. Most of the driving is around town... but it gets a good jaunt now and again.

That motor was clean clean clean on the top end.

The timing belt swap... Well, that was a headache, but it could have been MUCH worse. for a learn as you go project, IF you have the tools, I could teach a Rookie to do it properly.

It's been fed WPP made "Federated Auto Parts" oil for the last 2 years... before that, Fed sold Amalie as their house brand. Whatever, it works just fine, isn't showing any signs of grime whatsoever... I can buy it for 3.50 or less a quart not on sale... they make a special deal for me sometimes if I get 2 cases... I can usually get it to 3$/q There's another place in town selling Warren Unilube for 2.99 a quart.. case only. I wouldn't hesitate on that either. All my cars got WU made stuff for a few years. Over the 7 years of my cars... WPP for 1 year, WU for 3 years, Amalie for 2, WPP again for the last 2. No cars (out of 7 that I "watch over") have had any kind of lubrication related issues... Across the board, ATF's Gearlubes, etc, are usually WPP, WU, or Amalie. Wolf's Head, Federated Brand, Advance Auto Brand.... When there's a sale, I flip the bottles to look for the WPP (WNE) stamp, or the WU stamp. If I don't know the maker, I pass on it.

+1

I just did the T-belt on a 2001 Focus "Zetec". I was learning on the "GO" also. I could help anyone out with the job (with knowledge) if they have a Zetec and need the help.

If I can do it anyone can. LOL
