Has anyone ever gone past the 1 year mark? I have a 98 accord and last May I put in Pennzoil platinum at 109,000 miles. I did not drive the car as much this year for one reason or another, and I find myself at 114000 miles and 16 months.
At this point the synthetic was a mistake due to low mileage but has anyone gone over the 1 year threshold?

Sure. 16 months as well. I even have a UOA to prove it.

I betcha with PP you are just fine but I share your concern....I'd cry even if for no real reason.

I went over the 1 year mark, by 3-4 months, also by mistake.

I hardly drive my Neon but when I do it gets driven a decent bit, normally a drive to work (72 miles round trip). I have a sample sitting on my desk at home to send out but haven't messed with it yet. I was thinking of sending it to Polaris rather than Blackstone due to the oxidation number they provide. I know the Si numbers are going to be really high because when I changed the oil I learned that the sponge makeup filter for the breather into the valve cover was either eaten or disintegrated.

Its funny because you feel like you did something wrong because of the longer time frame. I feel that if its changed now the synthetic will be wasted.

Not sure why you feel that way. That synthetic still provided superior cold flow characteristics during winter, didn't it?

I run synthetic in my car and change it once a year due to low miles anyway. I don't feel bad about it one bit. Same thing in the bike.

Yeah, I've gone past two years with my '72 GMC 1500 on Valvoline VR1. I'm going for 6000 miles, and I only put 2000 a year on it.

Thanks for the responses. Since I only take the car to work about 25 minutes away, I am not concerned at all about the length of time.
Maybe I will keep it in awhile longer and have a UOA done.

For the previous oil change on our Taurus, the PP was in just 5 days short of 18 months and had 5375 miles. The PP didn't bother me, but I was a little concerned with the MicroGuard filter.

We're now at 4 months running Mobil 1 and a PureOne filter and I plan on going ~2 years and sending a sample for analysis.

Just acquired a 10 year old Taurus with low mileage that sat outside for 2+ years w/o moving. Looks like the oil was changed about 3 years ago at a quick lube - only has 500 miles since OCI. Oil looks new, engine is smooth and quiet - appears to be fine and I'm in no hurry to change it.

For the cost of a DIY oil change I'd change it. 2+ years sitting, oil changed 3 years ago why chance it? Dump some fuel injector cleaner in the gas, drive it for a tank or two before you change the oil, then get it good and hot and change the oil and filter.

Doubtful the engine will come apart if left alone, but whoever I sell it to should probably change it in a few thousand miles. Already had to put a new fuel pump in it, old one was locked solid - probably due to ethanol. Has some fresh gas now and the car runs great.

I didn't say it would come apart, and I didn't realize you were selling it. Let someone else worry about the oil if you plan on selling it. Clean the filter so it looks good and tell them you changed the oil 500 miles ago if they ask. You won't be telling any lies either.

Filter looks brand new already and I haven't touched it. I have somebody who already looked at it and I told them the whole story of how long the oil has been in there - they weren't worried about it. The hubby changes his oil every 3000 miles regardless and only uses Castrol GTX dino. 99% of the general public could care less about oil, just a PITA part of life to them.

Can't argue that fact I sold cars for a living, it often amazed me how clueless most people are. Still every once in a while you come across a person or two who actually know something, or bring a maven with them.

My vintage cars go more than a year because of low mileage. EVen my daughter's 99 Cherokee has gone 14 months (and counting) because she drives so little during the college semesters. As long as you get it good and hot EVERY time you drive it, I really don't think calendar time matters much. Modern engines (since the 70s) are actually fairly well sealed up- the PCV make-up vent is the only thing that's always open to the atmosphere, and so there's very, very little air/moisture exchange.
