"Honda's concept version of the Civic, which may have features that don't make the final production model, is a stark contrast to the Civic Honda rolled out four years ago. The 2016 Civic took some aggressive design risks, and Honda clearly isn't playing it overly cautious – something the automaker needs to do to break away from the stigma of its typically bland car designs."

"Adjectives used to describe the 2016 Civic concept in New York included athletic, aggressive, flashy, and game-changer – typically words reserved for automakers not named Honda.

Ultimately, what Honda hopes to accomplish is to product a sportier ride that will continue to attract a younger buyer. In fact, according to IHS Automotive, the Civic took top honors in retail sales to under-35 buyers between 2007 and 2013, and that's something the automaker wants to reclaim.

Not only is Honda aiming to reclaim its top spot among younger buyers, if the concept vehicle keeps its more aggressive and flashy styling for the production vehicle, it shouldn't surprise anybody to see the Civic replace the Toyota Corolla atop the segment sales next year -- and in arguably the second most competitive segment in the U.S., that's big time for market share and bragging rights.

If only Honda had paid closer attention to all the people tricking out their Honda Civics with aftermarket parts more than a decade ago, when "The Fast and the Furious" originally hit the movie theaters, the automaker might have been way ahead of the game already.
"

Did Honda got it right this time or they may alienate mature drivers so much such that their sale will go down ?

Civic sale is usually in the top 2 with Corolla in sale volume of compact segment in US the last 15-20 years, should Honda takes a big risk of a successful Civic over the last 20 years ? Usually when you have a car that sell at 200-300k a year you want to keep the fundamental the same.

What do you think ?

I think that's been how Honda has done it in the past, the coupe versions geared more towards the younger crowd, but the sedan is usually more tame for the general masses.

The Civic has long had a different image from that of the Corolla.
There were sporty RWD Corollas many years back, but not in recent memory.
The Civic has always been positioned as the sportier car and it has long appealed to younger drivers, while the Corolla is everyman's appliance and appeals to appliance buyers of all ages.
It was said many years ago that you can sell a young man's car to an old man, but you can't sell an old man's car to a young man.
To the extent that this is true, a fresher Civic should do just fine in the market.
The Corolla will soldier on with good sales numbers to those who want a reliable and durable personal transportation appliance.

ZZZzzzz no matter what they do (engine , styling, interior).
Why can't Honda have a normal interior without looking like an Atari video game ?

Toyota did a great job redesigning the current Corolla.

The current gen accord and the ones before last gen had IMO very nice lines. The civic has improved this gen to be something it Hink looks half decent.

That thing looks obnoxious, not due to the color, which is interesting, but because of the snout and tail, which are too big and not very attractive.

It's for people who are still stuck in a scene from the Fast and the Furious (2001.) Plus I really hate it when they try to market cars for young people since it hits my demographic (20's asian dude) and I friggin rather drive a old big pickup than a hip sporty design flaw front wheel drive vehicle.

Note I don't hate econoboxes, this ain't an econobox it's something else.

The same article said the reason Honda took a risk with the new 2016 Civic styling is

"While the Civic remains the segment's second best seller, its sales slipped 3% last year compared to the segment's overall 2.4% gain -- suggesting that competitors are slowly gaining ground."

The compact segment went up few percentage but Civic went down few percentage, it means Civic lost market share, not much but still a loss.

Wonder if Honda will install a [censored] can muffler on these from the factory to put even more annoying cars on the road?

Eek; the new Corolla looks like they're going for the Lamborghini Aventador look. Completely out of place for the car's intended purpose; that of an appliance.

The original Civic wasn't a teenage boys car.Appealed more to younger-to mid- females.Karen Silkwood was killed in one.

They alway say you can sell an old man a younger guy's car but not the other way around.

Not a huge Civic fan as they've become as boring as the Corolla in recent years with Honda doing the "misstep" with the 2012 model...and making the short order correction. In general, I'd take the right Civic or Corolla model of a couple decades back over the current offerings. Unfortunately, there doesn't really seem to be a "right" model anymore and it'll just be filtered down to the generic version unless the auto press and consumers start complaining...like what happened in 2012.

In my mind, a Mazda 3 might be a younger man's car while the basic Corolla and Civic are equivalent conveyances without much sportiness or demographic differentiation. There was a time when I might have thought that the Civic was a bit sportier but that's been some years. I have to agree that the interiors ( especially the dash ) of the Civic and the Fit are not particularly good looking.

Vuflan...

Why in the world would you ever take a Civic from a few decades back with all the LOUD road noise?? 2013-2015 models are SO much more refined with now smooth ride and MUCH reduced road noise!

Flint,

There are several cars that I'd take from the 80s and 90s in comparison to some current models independent of the noise, vibration, and harshness aspects. It really depends on the model.

The last Civic I rode in ( a 2011 I believe ) seemed to have as much road noise as an early 90s model that my friend owned.

That is just not true.. Although it is personal preference I suppose.
I cannot imagine a younger person cross shopping a Corolla, any model, vs a Civic, and not buying the Civic. 06-11 SI are my favorite. I love the K20Z3 with 8K+ RPM redline. It's great.
I love my SI, I want to keep it until I die.

I agree about the SIs...very nice car...too pricey for me though...

Kids still buy Civic's? Modding Civics seems like an old 90's thing these days, most Civic drivers seem to be around 30 now and they look pretty stock.

These days all the kids mod diesel pickups.
