Car is started sometimes 15 times a day, sometimes it idles for a time then someone changes their mind and it just gets turned off again.

There goes my earlier theory of weekly runs to get the engine hot would have prevented this

I agree this kind of covers any person driving a car. Between your and Indymac's post I am so shaken, I don't know what to do with my cars. My Civic really sees the short trips, I guess I have just got to change out at 3mo./3K.

Seriously???

How many miles are you going now anyway? You aren't really compares apples to apples here. I would seriously look at my own car without comparing it to this person's experience. There is no way to know all of the details to really make a complete change like that. I'd imagine it you pulled your valve cover off and it was clean, your pan isn't going to be anything like the OP's oil pan.

How do you like the SSO 0w30?? I would use it but warranty may be fishy on that one. I may go with the 5w20. I was just over- reacting a bit;) This guy used quality oil, so that's what I was worried about.

I know what you mean, I'd really determine a serious change based on if my engine was beginning to head towards more deposits etc. A quick look under the valve cover could help. If you are really concerned there is always something like LG engine protectant to aid in protecting your oil over the course of a long interval...and if you are worried you can always add MMO or something similar for a few hundred miles before your next few changes while using a High Mileage oil and/or a good Pennzoil for cleaning purposes.

As for SSO 0w-30, this is my first interval running it and I'm pulling it out prematurely once for a sample and depending on the results I may settle in at 7.5k, or reach my goal of 10k+. I will even try a product like the one I mentioned above if it really would help me do that. Not sure how it and Amsoil's product would mix, more so as in even if it is necessary.

OCIs seem to be from 6500-8000 miles depending on the use. He is almost 80 so quite a bit of short trips with highway (at least 2000 mile trips) thrown in 4-6 times a year. He has over 100k on it now and its clean as new. I think the OP vehicle either has seen some longer OCIs (not doubting the OP's words but) or something is wrong with the PCV system.

Here is a photo of my Dad's fill port on the Vue around 80k. It still looks the same.

Clean as they can get.

Bill

PS: oils used have been QS, Pennzoil, Mobil 5000 and Chevron. Fram or Supertech 7317 filters only...

Bill, I'm wondering if the Vue isn't as heavy or has better cooling than the Oddyssey minivan?

It's been a while since I've posted, but wow what a mess. Nice work by Trav. I have to agree that there might be some issues with the engine, but short trips and long OCI's are a formula for disaster in some cases. This proves it, I think cutting the interval in half would be a wise choice. I think the results would have been just about identical using even the best synthetic on the market.

don't take this the wrong way-since your'e the mech, but did you check the tstat is not either stuck open or opening too soon?

I know varnish is mostly from heat, but this one is odd

Yes the thermostat is fully functional as is the breather system.
I pulled the valve covers pics being posted in new thread.

Why does that look like he used Mobil 1? In over 30 years, I've never seen Mobil 1 do anything other than keep an engine clean. I'll bet you a social security check that was not Mobil 1.

Yes and no.I use a lot of different brands and weights depending on the engine.
Lots of excellent choices to be had from many manufacturers.I tend to find one that works well with the particular engine and stick with it.
JMHO but i don't think there is any one size fits all as far as motor oil goes.

that is almost as idiotic as my old posts bashing pennzoil.

Trav,

Is this the same Odyssey that was giving the VCM light before? The one which was quickly cured of that *specific condition* by the application of Kreen?

Trav,

I think the knock in my Acura MDX V6 is coming from behind the timing belt cover. At 98K the dealer replaced the timing belt, tensioner, idler pulley, water pump, etc. I would almost swear that this engine was silent before this work was done.

Do you think any of these could cause a knock only at idle?

Not to answer for Trav, but I had this work done on a 99 status and the tensioner wasn't adjusted correctly, you could hear the belt when coming to an idle or just starting the car, rubbing against the timing belt cover...ugh.
