Friend came over this evening for the customary Christmas beer, he mentioned he felt bad with his Honda OLM going 3.4k km (~1.8k miles) past 0% and has been flashing for a few weeks. He believes it's been at least 10k miles (16k km) so I offer to change it for him over a couple of beers. I just happened to have a Napa Professional series 51356 and a spare jug of VWB. Oil came out dark, but fill hole looked clean and happy. Here's the pics of the cut open filter:

He "felt bad" for going ~2k past the MM. But not bad enough to take it and get it done? 09 still under warranty? He's not aware of the actual OCI?

Filter looks like a Fram TG, without screen over bypass. Looks fine, though I wouldn't make a trip to my Honda dealer to buy an A-02 or buy online.

It was in great shape. Good pressure from the leaf spring when opening the can, adbv was very pliable and held in a good amount of oil that only came out when I cut the can open. It's a good looking filter IMHO and would use it without hesitation.

Fram-made OCoD ( BCoD?!) honda filter with Si ADBV. Just like my subaru filter. Is that an A/D/S 300 series woofer on the table?, I use to prototype in Wilmington mit Dr. Godehard Gunther ... and his train tapes

Nothing wrong with it, nothing special about it either. I'm not paying dealer/Honda prices for that construction. Others are welcome to though, I can do better construction wise for less money.

Not that fancy.. just an old Realistic 4" Woofer, model 40-1022B.

If they were the same price as any other option I would have them on my 'consider' list. But for double? I agree.

Have an A-02 sitting here cut open. Took it off my future dil Acura RDX at Thanksgiving. Thought I'd run the media area numbers vs P1.

The A-02 has 47 pleats, excluding the metal seam pleat. Each pleat is 3/8 inch deep and a width of 2&5/16 inches. Total media area 81.52 sq. inches.

The comparable P1 PL14610 has 105 sq inches of media as calculated by barlowc in this thread.. The P1 has ~10 in. more media length than the A-02.

Needless to say, my son and I replaced the dealer installed A-02 with a P1 from my stash.

I've liked the construction of every PL14610/PL14612 I've opened. I think they might be the two models with the most consistent quality Purolator makes.

I'm surprised he felt bad at all. He's made progress over the years. Thank goodness for the OLM and flashing indicators otherwise he might just have kept on going. He leases his Hondas from the same dealer and just swaps keys every 4 years.

I've seen packs of six sell for under $25 at Handa. Dealer price is probably closer to $7-8 in Canada.

Yeah, my local Acura dealer sells them for net price, which is about $6 each if I recall. I didn't ask about case pricing.

Actually they are currently 29.12 for a six pack at H and A, but add $12.78 for shipping to me and the Honda filter works out to ~$7.00 each. But, at least at H and A that's for the A-01, not the Tough Guard knock off shown here, with ~23.5 sq. in. less media than a comparable PL14610 P1.

Yeah, I've noticed the A01 be a little pricier, but worth it. Some people just like running OEM no matter what, so $7 and a few square inches of media they'll never see isn't going to make a difference to them. Only BITOG'ers analyze to death every little detail to justify a purchase. That's why I run $3 P1's on the Subaru

The Honeywell made Honda filter is too much money in my opinion. Without trying to sound contradicting, the filter did well for the mileage used. If it was on some kind of clearance thing for $2 each then that would be a different story.
