Home Invasion Robbery today :(

There's been a serious run on home-defense type guns in Dallas. I've been to a gun shop and 3 Academys, and have called Cabelas and everyone's out due to heavy purchasing for the last 2 weeks.

I've decided on a shotgun, but would prefer something around 18" just for storage and handling purposes. I don't want to have to swing a 28"+ barrel around trying to get aim.

Gonna give Bass Pro shops a call later to see what they have. There's a home-defense gun shortage in Dallas....strange.

UPDATE----

Just got off the phone with the Assistant DA. Court today for the main suspect, seeking jailtime greater than 1 year. One guy was released (yikes), and the other had a felony warrant already so he is done for. He wanted the copy of the videos, dropping them in the mail today (well, secure and insured FedEx with delivery signature required).

If one guy's been released, I'd be scared. He's had a good look at you, knows where you live, and may even now know you're not armed. If he doesn't care about the consequenses, he may come back to 'settle' the score for ALL of them.

I'd get armed, and fast. You just became one HECK of a target.

Any shotgun with a grip, holds more than 3 rounds or short barrel will be really in short supply.

And expensive If you can get one in the next few months.

Good luck. Bill

That is a BIG IF.

Got my Winchester Featherweight 12G pump (sans wood plug), 5 rounds. First three 7.5 bird, last 2 magnum.

Solo2driver - I would contact the local PoPo just to let them know that you know one perp is loose. They will come down that street a little more frequently. I would also have a couple friends over for a surprise party.

Hopefully and prayerfully this one guy has seen the light and will walk away from his "friends".

A good dog is your best first line of defense. First for the warning to get prepared while having your wife call the police, second for the frontal attack that will most likely occur. If they get past my three canines all bets are off. If the guys have him properly occupied and no fiream is observed I would hand the shotgun to my wife, take the baseball bat out of the corner and get the satisfaction of an up close and personal beat down on a lowlife dirt bag. My wife knows that if she is calling the police she is also telling them she heard the intruder say he was gonna kill me and my family. I think God would overlook that lie even if sworn on the Bible, he isn't as merciful as some think. Whatever your politics the right to defend yourself and your family should not be infringed upon in this country, period. That should go into your voting decisons at every level of government, including local and state judgeships. Do your research, the answers are available.

I think the Mark Twain quote about his demise being exaggerated is appropriate here.

But let me know if I can help.

The Houston chapter of the BITOG Militia is forming up as we speak.

We really do need a secret squirrel handshake or something.

Dibs of first you tube view!!

My dogs go all wacko on strangers. I love it. They may not take big chunks, but they get the attention on the subject at hand.

Also consider a house alarm. My alarm will wake up entire block (they are much louder than car alarms). If I had a gun or viscious dog, I'd have to buy $1m personal liability insurance, which is made more expensive when you list the fact you own a gun or viscious dog.

Bill in Utah,

I know you own a few firearms, but in a case like this , what is your opinion of a hand gun verses shotgun for home protection ?

I was thinking about a Glock for home protection.

A shotgun is better for outside work. It's pretty hard to swing a 3-4 ft long gun around in a house.

It's not that bad when the barrel accidentally gets sawed off.

The shotgun in a home is a little long. The recoil also is something to deal with. A pump shotgun is a excellent defense weapon but not the best to go "clearing" a house with. (let me add also a pistol grip shotgun fired from the hip is one of the most un accurate weapon around. I only have regular stocks on a shotgun.)

I have both in my bed room. My Rem 870 is loaded with #4 shot (OO goes through a wall real easy).

I had quite a few Glocks but they are all gone. I really like the S&W M&P series. My bed side gun is a Ruger P345 with a LED light on the front. Easy to shoot and my wife likes it quite well. Keeps one hand free.

Our plan for anything inside the home is grab the cell phone and call 911, grab the kids place them with us in a safe room and wait. If the bad guy(s) come in the room, not good for them.

I built this house so it has a long hall before you get to the bed rooms at the end. At the end of the long hall is 18 steps. So a LONG way before you get near us. The dog is very good at anyone around the home.

If you decide on a shot gun, make sure you get your wife to shoot it. You do have to aim esp in a home. My wife will shoot it but would rather use a handgun or AR15 for defense.

Another thing, the Glock is imported and there is a VERY good change in about 2 months, there will be a order to stop all imported weapons. Keep that in mind as stock will be depleted since gun sales are at a all time high.

Take care, Bill

PS: one of my favorite subjects. I really enjoy reloading, shooting and just being out.

I'm also of the opinion that a good dog not only is great company, but perhaps the best alarm system one can buy. My German Shepard knows when the UPS man is at my door before he does!

Allways consider your canines as an early warning system only. They're really pretty easy to kill if predator is determined. My 12lb. Yorkie can make as much noise as the sheperds, and a lot less likely to get harmed from being in the way.

Bob

Sure, if it's a 100% dedicated planned invasion the dog is toast ..but generally speaking you're going to make yourself a more difficult target. Easier targets are going to be chosen first.

My all time home security was my two shepherds. One German ..one Belgian. The GS didn't just bark at the door, it wanted out to get you. Both were females. We never locked a door. I wish I had them now. Now I've got a very paranoid and emotionally conflicted Rot-n-Lab and a beagle.

You would have to have either a crazy person ..or a real desperate one to just do a home invasion into known hostile territory. That would only be sensible if you had known assets of tremendous worth in your home ..or serious enemies.
