Home Invasion Robbery today :(

Wow..amazing story. Glad you're ok. I actually went gun shopping last night and have been torn between a .38 revolver and a shotgun. The .38 would be easier to store and access quickly, but my odds of hitting someone isn't as good as with a shotgun. Also from what I'm told, a shotgun isn't as hazardous to the neighbors if I have to shoot inside my house. I guess that's the deciding factor for me...I don't want to kill someone across the street while defending my home.

In light of your story, I'm heading to Academy tonight. I'm feeling more and more vulnerable as time goes on with nothing in the house but kitchen knives.

I'm thankful for states that have super safe 30 day waiting periods for getting a firearm..

Oh, and only one a month would also make me feel warm and safe...

Glad the bad guys follow all of the 22,000 gun laws in the books.. We need more laws enacted.

Glad to hear that you are safe. Get a good firearm and get some practice with it.

Lucky for you that Texas is not a stupid equal force state.

Take care and be safe.

My very good friend back home in CA, ex-Navy etc etc etc, recommended his home setup-- 12ga loaded in this order: beanbag, salt load (for extra pain?), dove/bird load, and then the rest with very heavy shot. Figures if he has to shoot someone (which he has no problem with), might as well try to just stop them first...and if he has to get to the real damaging loads, he can.

I just don't think I can keep a rifle or shotgun in an accessible area...a handgun can be safely stored in a good area, I don't mind spending more time at the range. I'm in Texas, it's actually okay to defend yourself and your family!

A gun expert that works in my office suggested that I mount a pair of C-brackets under my bed and store the gun there, within easy reach while still in the bed. I'm not hip to the whole "stand it in the corner" approach that I've seen in a few people's houses.

I have a 2-year-old girl who is very tall and knows how "stuff works", and another on the way in July....has to be in a case, up high, locked.

+1 on getting a Mossberg 12 gauge. I have one for home use. With 00 buck shot.

As for a carry gun, I would advise against the Taurus. It is a good starter gun, but I would never carry it.

If you want a carry gun that will fire when you need it get a Glock. I will only carry Glock.

9mm is easy to shoot and its light.
However I would have to recommend something with more punch. I am getting the glock 27. A 40 cal.

I would use nothing smaller than a 40cal. a 45 round would work best.

If you have to shoot someone, you want a round that will put them down for the count!

Good luck with your CCP.

and

Please take some classes on guns and gun safty if you have not allready.

Just "shotting my opinon" here.

I have 00 buck in my Mossberg 500. If the day comes where I have to pull my shotgun on someone in my house. I DO not want to have to wait for 3-4 shots, untill I get a lethal shot at them.

The ONLY time you should point a gun at someone is when you intend on killing them. They teach you that in police training.

So if I need to shoot some one, I do not want to give them any chance of getting a round off, or getting any closer to me. You want to STOP them not daze or hurt them.

**This is just my opinion, I am not trying to step on any toes. what makes you feel most comfortable counts for you.

That's one of the dumbest ideas I have heard. If you are going to shoot someone, shoot to kill.

All you are would accomplish with your friends "Miss Manners" approach to greeting home invaders would be increasing your chance of losing the encounter.

Agreed 100%. If I pull the trigger on my weapon, my intent is for the perp to be Tango Uniform. No exceptions.

Thats crazy...ive been telling my wife we should get a gun but shes not too crazy about them. All its going to take is one time for something to happen and were getting one.

Reminds me of pistol training in the military. I was practicing head shots when this helpful sergeant says, "LT, you'll get a better score if you shoot center of mass." I tell him, "Sergeant So-and-so, if I can do head shots consistently on the range, I'll have no problem shooting center of mass in the heat of battle should the bad guys ever get close enough that I have to use my side-arm."

I'm so sorry to hear that. Did you discover that *before* or *after* you married her?

I lost my chance when we first got married. I had convinced her that she needed one so we went to shop but couldn't find any that would a. fit in her hand and b. easy to load. The revolvers were too big for her hand, and the tiny pistols that did fit in her hand were too hard to load.

A few months later when I came up with the idea that an AK-47 would be much easier for her to load and operate, she had changed her mind. I think she thinks that I cannot be trusted as I joked about her life insurance...

I learned that someone else.

James, very glad to hear you're OK, and I'll (what is it, 10th!!) the notion of getting a shotgun. I prefer the Remington 870, and then upgrade it with a pistol grip, a short barrel, and a flashlight with a grip switch, loaded with federal tactical 00 buck. Lots of people say don't get all the doodads like the pistol grip, but when you need to quickly grab the weapon and crank out some lead, I find it to be easier then a regular stock (controls the recoil better when you firing at hip level).

Keep it in a locked case though because of your daughter.
