#1- Would you run synthetic in a Chevy 350 engine that has never had it and is at about 165000 miles?

#2- Assuming it would be worth the money to run syn oil, how many miles would you put on a Penz Platinum and Purolator filters? 15000 miles on the oil and change filter every 5000? Any suggestions would be great.

Since I have owned the vehicle (91 pickup @ 99000miles) I have run 5w30, and I have rotated through Penzoil, Valvoline, etc.

Why not keep doing what got you to 165,000 Miles?

You live in Minnesota, that makes it easy! Yes, put in the thinnest synthetic you can find, perhaps a 0W30. Winter starting will become a breeze. Seriously, I have switched several high mileage cars with no effects at all. All of our current cars are past 200,000 on Mobil 1 0W20 and burn virtually no oil at all.

I started using syn. in my '85 350 chev p/u plow truck 2 years ago no problems, shure makes the ol girl start good
on them cold mornings..

truck has 133k on the clock....

use it!!!!!!

"That depends on whether it is a GIII or GIV synthetic..."

Why?

Also, I've switched several cars with 200k+ miles to synthetic with no problems.

Mario, if I lived in MN, I'd switch in a heartbeat. In Los Angles, 40F is a cold morning, I can't imagine driving in your weather. You must get temps below 40 several times a year, lol.

I would probably run an Auto-RX treatment prior to switching over to a synthetic oil.

I wouldn't suggest a 15,000 mile OCI with Pennzoil Platinum. If you're interested in an extended OCI such as that, I'd probably be looking at one of the Amsoil oils or perhaps the Mobil 1 EP. I'd also start with a shorter OCI such as 7,500 miles and have an oil analysis performed to make sure you can extend the interval out to 15,000 miles.

IMO best synthetic for that high mileage is Maxlife Synthetic. Go 7500 miles on the filter. Can try 15000 mile OCI, but should UOA at 7500 miles and only change filter if decide to extend the OCI.

I would switch to 5w30 or 0w30 and run 7500 miles. I have switch to synthetic in both my 305 SBC's and now my 307 Olds. No problems at all. You could stick with what you've got depending on how long you plan on keeping it cause that engine is not very hard on oil. Regular changes with cheap oil would probably keep it running past 300k miles. Theres a woman that brings her 89 Caprice with a 305 TBI into the dealership I used to work at with 470,000km's on it and she's never used anything but the cheap bulk oil we put in them and her car runs perfect. I even got to hear it start up cold the other day and not a sound from the engine.

Penzoil Platinum will do just fine. I recommend using an Amsoil EAO filter, it will filter finer and take a lot more of the contaniments that is sure to be liberated by a good synthetic, than competing designs. I would do my first oil change a little early and use a hi powered magnetic oil drain plug.
