High mileage oils help or hurt plastics in engine

Many newer engines are using plastic parts inside the engine. I've seen some plastic timing chain guides fail. High mileage oils are said to have seal conditioners that soften and swell seals . Does anyone know the affect of these conditioners on plastic parts ? Do they help or hurt the plastic ?

So are you claiming the seal swellers in High Mileage oils are different than the ones already in other oils?
 
I'd be more worried about the engine heat breaking the plastics down as opposed to any oil additives.
 
Oxidation make acidity in oil that eats plastics. And, since HM is supposed to have better antioxidation it would protect plastics longer. Unless nitrogen baded amino-polyethylenes thst eats plastics are present in HM engine oils, maybe thats an issue.
 
Nylon has been used on Timing chain gears by all the domestic automakers since the 1970's.

Polymers are now used in structural areas (eg: intake manifolds). Good enough for handguns, must be good enough for Honda.

Most (almost all) plastics are made from oil.

I don't see an issue; if there were, well, they've had about 40 years to figure it out.

Actually since the '60s, they were failing in the '70s and AFAIK nylon toothed timing gears were discontinued in the '80s... I've never replaced one with anything but steel...

Now there are all sorts of stories about failed plastic chain guides and intakes, so nope in 40 years they haven't got it right... It's no fault of the oil, when these materials are subjected to continual heat/cool and or wear cycles they fail...
 
Almost makes you wonder if high mileage oils would be the best oils to use from day one,since they always have more friction fighting additives,better base oils,higher tbn,and more seal conditioners.

Is there any definitive proof that high mileage oils have any disadvantages vs advantages or vise versa?

Just how different do you think they are?
 
Look at it this way. Most High Mileage oils these days are SN/GF-5. Therefore, they are fully compatible with the OEM specifications, to the letter. MaxLife is even dexos1 now. If GM thought it would be a problem, they wouldn't have been licensed.
 
Next oil change on the 13 Corolla will be 80k. I think I'll start running a full synthetic high mileage 0w20 (if there is one) or 5w20, but not sure which brand. Figure it couldn't hurt anything. I stick with the 10k oci recommended by Toyota, so a little extra protection should be a good thing.
