What do you guys recommend? Girlfriend just got this car a couple of months ago and this will be the first time that I am doing maintenance on it.
Thanks in advance for all advice,

The best oil is the oil from a quality company [ Shell. Chevron Castrol etc. ] that meets the manufactures specifications

Get 5 QT 5W-30 Super Tech (WM) or Kirkland (Costco)
2004 Passat 1.8T takes about 4.5 QT so you'll have 1/2 QT for fill if needed.

Defiantly use a VW 502 oil. The older Passats don't have direct injection and there is no need for a VW 504 oil.
Walmart stores often have the best price for 5 quart jugs of VW 502 oils. You should be able to find Mobil1 0W40 for
$24.97.

The ignition coils were problematic on those old VW's. VW has revised the coils and they are now reliable. Don't buy aftermarket ones from AutoZone... .

those engines turned crap oil into sludge, that’s for sure.

M1 0W40 is cheap, meets spec and readily available at every walmart. a normal SP synthetic would probably work fine at a short sub-5k intervals but what’s the point.

Just conventional oil turned into sludge, combined with the reduce sump capacity of the oil pan getting in the way of the subframe...

Mediocre Castrol Syntec 5w40 (Group III) holds up in those engines... along with using the larger capacity oil filter.

The transverse 1.8T's didn't have sludge issue though.

Hello! No need to fit to 3.5 hths spec into this VW gasoline. VW 503/506 (based on ACEA A5/B5) has 2.9 hths spec.
Any 5w30 with 2.9 hths and low noack (~10) would fit with 5-10K OCI.

Yes it does need min 3.5cp. Only acceptable approval for this engine is VW502.00 or VW504.00/507.00 which retroactively covers this engine on EU market.
