Bad boy looks awesome! Except if you had enough swing room to use this, you'd probably already have the filter off.

Probably lots of other assorted uses for a huge jawed vice grips though. Item 66568, I can't get a link to work right to it...

I'll second tom slick. Those channel lock ones are just the nuts to pop a stubborn filter loose. H/F has them on sale every now and then for around $4.00. I know, I know they'll probably only last for 2 or 3 changes but I got lucky and mine have lasted so far for at least 5 years now.

If you need vise grips to remove your filter then you didn't install it correctly.

I have never understood why the mfg's of oil filters paint them with a gloss paint. Usually one's hands are coated with some oil when changing oil, then having a slick filter, then having arthritis and a poor grip, ect., ect. Just makes no sense at all.

I remember one time I had a oil filter stick so bad I had to punch a screwdriver thru the case to get it poped and started. Yes I do oil my rubber gaskets before installing.

This must be why they make these tools.

I think the oil filter manufacturers are getting the hint. The new Purolator Pure Ones are coated with a paint that feels like it has sand mixed in. They're very easy to remove.

Why it took them decades to "get a grip" is anyone's guess.

Vise Grips are subjected to a lot of stress when used and the only ones that work reliably for me are the original ones made by the Petersen Manufacturing Co. I have been disappointed with the performance of cheap copies of Vise Grips.

You obviously are talking about the Vise-Grips from 10+ years ago. Peterson sold out to Irwin. The Irwin Vise-Grips are now all made in China and the quality has taken a serious dive in both finish, fit and strength. If you see a new Vise-Grips in a store that has the "Made in USA" label on it, it's been hanging on the peg for a couple of years.

Nearly every factory installed oil filter was screwed on much too tightly, and I had to resort to drastic measures to get it off the engine.

^ Yes -- tell the factory gorillas that. I cracked/crushed the can before it came loose. Once it was cracked and leaking, I HAD to get it off:(. I always dread the initial (factory fill) change.
