I have the latest version of SpyBot (1.4), and running FireFox 1.0.7

Today, I started SpyBot, and clicked on "search for updates" and it brought up a "detection rules" update, which I checked, and hit "download updates". After that the download window came up for a few seconds, then I got the message "Bad checksum" on the area where the detection rules message was up. at the same time, there's a red circle with a slash and exclamation mark next to the "detection rules"

what does this mean?
why wasn't the detection rules updated/downloaded?

any advice will be great

EDIT: tried it again just now, and it worked the 3rd time; download of updated detection rules succesful this time. Thanks for reading anyway, and still curious what happened?

You know, I no longer use Spybot. It can easily suffer man-in-the-middle attacks as well as errant code attacks as it's freeware.

I ran into that several times and just gave up. I use AdAware, PestPatrol, Counterspy, and/or Trojan Hunter. Spybot is no longer in use on my systems, just isn't worth it...it didn't find anything that the others couldn't.

hmmm...
I also have Adaware SE personal (The latest) on my PC. Too bad that the "Ad-watch" tool is inactive on the free "personal" version I have.

perhaps I should make it the primary tool...??

What atre some other good free spyware? (in addition to what you mentioned?)

Thanks.

CounterSpy works for free for 15 days. That's good for removing junk from your system, then uninstall it after it expires.

I'm finding that the best spyware removers aren't free.

PestPatrol with CounterSpy have are the most effective combo in my experience. But even then, there's always some new wrinkle that neither can remove. Then, Google winds up being the vehicle to fix the most obscure sypware junk.

I've had the same updating issue with Spybot in the past. Usually selecting another download site from the dropdown menu will cure the problem. The "Safer Networking #1(Europe)" option in the menu has been very reliable for error-free updates.

Google---well, just googling for the solution. This generally takes a bunch of time and usually involves using someone's hand made scripts to delete the odd-ball spyware's footprints.

http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Is a good anti-spyware program, it works for 14 days before you buy it it will clean your system. It is well worth the 29.95 for one year of updates. If I run Ewido first there is nothing left for MS Antispyware or Xoft or Adaware to find, ewido cleans it!!! I just got over being infected with SpywareStrike and Ewido cleaned it and AVG found the reloader(Zlob.FD) and cleaned that off my system. SpywareStrike/Spyaxe/SpySheriff also loads a file into the restore files and blocks any restore attempts.

Spybot does the same with me. Works when I retry it. Havn'nt had a single Spyware attack after installing SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 and then updated it. Better to block than wait till infected and try to remove IMO.

I sometimes get that error when downloading updates. The usual fix is to select a different download site. First off, before you click to start the downloads, you need to select the download site that's closest to you, to get the fastest download. If that site has a corrupted update file, just choose a different download site. No biggie.

This works with the checksum error.
1: Uninstall Spybot
2: Reboot and delete the Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy folder
3: Reinstall and update Spybot
