Some updates show a bunch of stuff after reboot and I'm thinking this might be what you have seen.

Yup, this. Some updates run a series of registry key updates on the black screen prior to loading Windows. They are in the thousands so it would fit what may be going on here.

Yes, it was stating "updates" I think problem is solved now.
I ran HD utility and no problems were noted. Next, I checked the updates log, about 300, instead of the thousands reported. Lastly, I installed 40 critical updates. No more problems (I hope).

Thanks for the suggestions and ideas.

Perhaps...but Windows 7 is set up to automatically update, and had been doing that till now. It seems all this started after I installed a highest rated free malware detector/remover; and then uninstalled it because the machine became super slow. Seems Windows did not automatically update after that. Who knows...

What is the brand name and model of this highest rated free malware detector/remover?

Seems to me you ran the program there and didn't check-off the Automatic Updates deletion that probably took place.
