Here are filters that I am considering but I need help choosing the better one. I have a 04 civic and i plan on doing 5,000k oci's and i'm still trying to decide on whether to go synthetic or stay with dino. I am not limiting my choices to just these filters its just the ones i can think of, but most importantly I have to be able to find it locally.

Purolator Pure One
Purolator Premium Plus
Napa Gold
Honda newer OEM
Supertech
Bosch
Mobil 1

I put a Mobil 1 in my wife's 03 Civic. Probably won't use it again, at $10 a piece. I just used it because it is the same filter that goes on my Yamaha FJR1300 and I had an extra one laying around. My next oil change, I will be using the Purolator premium plus. Its less expensive and quality is as good if not better.

Go with a Napa Gold - I use them on everything. I also use one on my FJR 1300 that's longer than stock for greater oil capacity...

John.

If a non Fram Honda filter is available at a reasonable price, I would go with it. Most of the OEM's are great filters for the price. Otherwise an ST is about as good as most, and cheaper. You might look at the Auto zone and Advance Auto house brands too. They are not proven to be as good as ST yet. I don't think they carry the 3950 my truck takes or the 9018 for my car. There is very little hard data showing any advantage for the higher priced filters. They do allow you to brag about what good care you take of your car.

An over size never hurts as long as the bypass is right, and you have room. Note, if it sticks down further, you don't have room,.

If it has the threaded end bypass valve, else Wix/Napa Gold should or the Motorcraft equalivalent of the Purolator should (and low priced)

I don't know if I can recomend Motorcraft filters now that they aren't available at Wal-mart, where else can you get them?

According to the Motorcraft website, their products are availabe at the following retail stores:

Advance Auto Parts

AutoZone

Car Care Auto Parts

Murray’s Discount Auto Parts

O’Reilly Auto Parts

Strauss Discount Auto

(Wal-Mart is also listed)

SuperTech

Of those we only have Autozones(which don't carry Motorcraft) and one Advanced AP about 20 miles away(doesn't carry them either).

It depends on your budget and oil and filter change intervals. Me, I change my oil and filter every 2,000 to 3,000 miles. Some look at this as a waste but, I can't stand to have oil in my crank case that is black as India Ink. For the oil filters that you have listed, you have put up some very good ones. I like Purolators, Mobil 1, and maybe Napa (Wix Product). Mobil 1 filters I have seen are expensive but, great products. If you are on a constrained budget like me, the best bang for the buck is Purolator. If you are one for extended drains use the Purolator Pure One or Mobil 1 if you got extra money to burn. In the past I've used the cheaper filters and have had problems such as gaskets coming off at base, leaks, and filters working theirselves loose due to whatever. Off subject I have had more than one occasions where I have had Hastings oil filters work theirselves loose due to vibration on my dumptruck, I've seen this happen on one other dumptruck in our fleet. Boss even looked over my shoulder to see that I was installing filters properly to specs and it still happened on occasion. I won't knock Hastings quality, their filters just have to be hand tightened more than specs specify.

I think I mentioned this before, but if you go to www.handaaccessories.com and buy the Filtech OEM filter. It is part number that ends with A01. A02 is the Fram. They had a limited supply. Filtechs are nice filters. When I run out I think I am going with Wix or something alike.

I might go with a Super Tech filter but i was wondering if anybody know if the model for honda's part number st(?)7317 has an ecore or an anti drainback valve? I went to walmart today and opened one of the boxes up and the filter seems pretty small, is it the same size as oem?

I think you'll be fine with whatever filter you choose from the above list. For me, the placement of the bypass valve is a factor. After much reading and thought, I think that having the bypass at the threaded end is best. This may or may not allow less "dirty" oil to exit the bypass valve. I have used the Champion Labs filters for quite some time and have no complaints at all. The Supertech filter is a hard bargain to pass up (I have a few on my shelves. Is having 9 a few?? LOL). Try a few. Find the one that you like the best.

Use the one you find on sale or the one that you get free with a rebate--they will all perform adequetely at 5K intervals.

It is not the size of the filter that counts. If the OEM is the Fram version, a smaller ST may well have more filter area. Nearly all filters have a ADBV now, look for rubber inside the holes around the outside edge that keeps oil from flowing back out of them. Look in the big center hole. Conventional filters have a perforated metal tube up the middle, and a metal end cap. The Ecore has a black plastic grid, and a plastic end cap.

If you have room for it, you might select the ST 3950. It has a ADBV, a bypass, the 20 mm thread, and the last one I cut open had generous 189 sq. in. I have been using them ever since I chopped open a few filters and found out what was inside a few years ago. No more Frams.

You're right, my man, it is a small filter. But it's just a little four banger engine too. As far as part numbers go, my mobil 1 was M1-110, and I just bought a Purolator PureONE for it yesterday, since the wife is really racking up the miles fast, and its part number was PL14610, $5.88 at AdvanceAuto. They had their own brand on sale for $1.24 each, so I asked the guy who makes them. He said he didn't know but the part numbers were exactly the same as Fram. No thanks.

All those mentioned are good filters. You won't go wrong whatever you chose.

A guy at AdvanceAuto also told me it didn't really matter who made their house oil filter, becasue they are all pretty much the same. Then again I do not know his definition of "pretty much."

How much bigger is the 3950 than the 7317?
