Apparently, I might be in some trouble. On Sunday, I was on my feet alot and doing several hours of physical activity, which isn't too unusual for me. But, later in the afternoon, I noticed I had around a 4" long vein sticking out a bit from the front of my right leg in the mid-calf area. Didn't think too much of it and figured it might be a varicose vein, even though I never had one before.

Move forward a few hours...

On my right leg, I note that the vein is now sticking out and has several knots along the length, which is stretched from my ankle to my groin area. It literally wraps almost around my entire knee as well. On my left leg, I have 2 more (I'm guessing they're 2 and not 1 large one). I called my doctor and scheduled to see him.

Monday night, I lay down to go to bed and I get neuropathy in both hands (fingers) and both feet. Eventually it works its way up my entire right leg in about 30 minutes. And, shooting pain up my right leg. My right foot goes from ice cold to sweating hot. So I go to the ER.

There they did back xrays (figured pinched nerves), a CT scan (rule out stroke), and blood work (diabetic family history). All comes back normal. I explained to them about the veins, but they didn't think much of it. They think all of it is neurological related. I'm leaning towards circulatory.

My vitals weren't too good. When I walked in I had a BP of 150/100 - when I left it was 130/80. Some of that was definitely stress related. Sugar was 109.

I've reasoned now that this vein on my right leg is pushing on a nerve bundle in my foot, causing shooting pain up my leg, ending at my knee. It also causes itching and burning. Apparently, similar to Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome (TTS).

I'm scheduled to see another doctor next Monday. Any advice or questions I should ask? What kind of doctor(s) should I see next?

BTW, I don't have any swelling, no discoloration on skin, no joint pain, no chest pain, and feel fine otherwise. Didn't get bit by anything or eat anything different either.

Thanks for reading.. didn't mean it to be so long!

I worked with a guy a long time ago that had a vein puff up and turn red on his arm. He said it was some sort of infection.

Not sure if your blood worked covered this.

Everyone is different, but that sugar is a bit high, right on the cusp of interest.

If you have high BP combined with high sugar odds are your going to have kidney issues. Those can cause exactly the experience you had/have. I'd definitely agree it is circulatory in nature.

Do you own an inversion table? If not consider getting one.

You've overstated it. "Normal" blood sugar is 80-120 mg/dl. He does not appear to be diabetic. I'm diabetic and my physicians don't get concerned until my A1C hemoglobin gets above 7.0, which represents a prolonged blood sugar of 150 mg/dl.

Also, 130/80 is not considered high blood pressure.

I would invest in a BP tester (arm cuff). I have the one rated highly in Consumer Reports. Don't get a cheap one and don't believe the free machines in the stores. Even if you do not have high blood pressure now, you may in the future and it good to have.

I would not drink any alcohol.

I would really watch my sugar intake.

I should get full bloodwork done next Monday. I'm going to request the A1C be included. My mother, aunt, and grandmother all have diabetes.

I do. I get up as much as I can, but I typically have to sit a good amount of time. I'm very active when I get home, though.

Hey, as you heard me say FIRST, we are all different.

I would be very concerned if my blood pressure was consistently 150/100 as his was when he was first admitted. But that could simply be excitement and/or 'white coat' syndrome. Without knowing his resting heartbeat it is much more difficult to draw conclusions about BP.

I also come from a long line of adult-onset diabetics and in my particular case anything over 100 for FASTING blood sugar is cause for alarm. Maybe he just had a candy bar? But it is definitely worth watching, especially with his family history!

+1 109 sugar is perfecly normal, your sugar would have to be much, much, higher for decades to see any side effects. Twenty five year diabetic speaking here.

Things got worse last night.. almost went back to the ER, but decided to wait until morning. Feel better now, but last night was really not fun.

My right hand went white and cold, right arm hard to lift and very heavy. Swelling in both knees - right one is worse.

My chest and face went numb for about 1 hour or so. It finally went away before I went to sleep. No symptoms this morning, other than some swelling in my knees, and the bulging veins in my legs (I counted 4 total).

If it weren't for work, I would have gone to the hospital. After today, I'm not so concerned, but I'm teaching at the college today and didn't want to cancel my class.

I'm pretty baffled by all of it. Kind of scared last night. I could tell I wasn't thinking clearly - had trouble focusing. Has to be a circulation/blood issue?

I'm picking up a blood pressure monitor on the way home. I have several family members that have them.

Mike, my prayers for you as well. Please be proactive and get on the Doctors or have your wife or another relative there so you can get the care you need. This kind of stuff IS scary, and the worst thing to bring to a hospital.

Good luck.

You need to find a doctor who is willing to entertain the idea that this is NOT normal and needs further investigation. I would be freaking out if I was in your shoes.

That and maybe a clot, a potentially deadly issue. Do not ever hesitate to see a doctor, or go to the ER if you suspect you are having serious health issues.

Agreed. That's first thing that came to my mind, as well. DO NOT NEGLECT this. DO NOT WAIT. THIS IS SERIOUS. Go see another specialist, a cardiologist preferably.
