At Walmart tonight, I happened to stroll through the oil aisle. "No really honey, we didn't come through here last time!" I noticed on the 5-qt jugs of Havoline that a "Recycle your oil at Walmart" label was on there...but it wasn't just applied on -- it was actually part of the screen printing. Stores like Walmart and Best Buy and Circuit City often have their own models of computers and printers, but apparently Walmart now has their own bottles of Havoline as well.

The label was exactly the same as elsewhere (still Deposit Shield and all that), but it had a little 1/2" by 3" area at the lower left about recycling your oil at Walmart.

Since walmart has the Patent for the 5 quart jug, I guess they can make the oil makers put on somthing for them.

Anyone notice the 5.5qt jugs of Castrol at Pep Boys? Thought that was intersting... a bit off topic- sorry!

Given how wal-mart influences the production of stuff to a price point, and have their own bottles with their own high volume sales... Id be worried about the product quality changing to the barebones minimum.

Mabe this wont happen... it all depends on if it is profitable to chevron... but Id be aware...

This type of thing happens quite a lot in mass-packaging of consumer goods, motor oil isnt an exception.

What happens is the contracted company provides the labels for third party use, in this case Wal-mart. The bottler is doing a "run" of Havoline for Wal-mart, using the "walmart" label, then "store X" label, then the standard "Havoline DS" label.
Ive even seen a few with Juan Pablo Montoya's car on the label..

Ill give you another example...

Pepsi cans at my local Walmart (NW Indiana, 35 miles from Chicago) have the Chicago Bears secondary label, encouraging consumers to "stock up" for game day. If I were to travel south or east 30 minutes or so, Ill get the Indianapolis Colts secondary label.

Third example....

I once visited a chlorine products company (washer fluid, bleach, pool shock) when they were packaging the blue stuff..
Same bottle and product, going to hundreds of different stores.
Walmart/Dollar General/Walgreens/CVS/etc

Basically, its target marketing to a particular store or geographical market.

Dont worry!!!! Same product, different wrapper.

(Sorry for the long post...)

It happens to Tide detergents. I was told by a price analyst at Safeway HQ that Walmart ask for a lower end formula with less fragrance than the official Tide formula elsewhere.

Worked for a major reslient flooring manufacturer. We made different patterns for different large retailers (Lowes, Home Depot, etc) that were ezclusive to them. However, as far as I know, the construction was always the same, differing only by price point as did the flagship brands.

Lemon Pledge at Home Depot is cheap for a large spray can.
It also performs like it is diluted. Get the real stuff.
I hope they [Walmart, etc.] don't start mandating what goes in engine oil.
