So I was working my parts counter today and a customer brought in some old school Castrol GTX 10w-40. I'm talking really old school guys, like SJ grade with the 80's text/characters on it! What should I do with it? I have like 18 bottles of this stuff sitting my store by my oil tank! I would hate to waste good oil, even if it is old.

Are the bottles still sealed? I'd take it home. At worst, you'll have lawnmower oil for life. At best, you could use it in a classic car.

Lets see, my lawn mower gets its oil changed once a year.
It takes one pint of oil.
2 pints = 1 quart.

So you have 36 years of oil for your lawn mower right there. Of course you could change the oil half way through the season, so that you go through it twice as fast.

But then again you dont like to waste oil.

If you know someone with an old beater its the perfect oil. Or maybe someone who has something that's a leaker or oil burner. Or as mentioned, mix in 1 qt/OC, or the mower, or every mower on your block. I'm sure its still good. I've used oil older than that, it was laying in my car trunk when I cleaned it out before selling it.

I second the VOA idea. Especially a TAN test. Would be interesting to see how the oil held up over 20 years and glimpse an '80s SJ formulation.

I would not use that old of an oil in my car.

And mixing it with new oil is pointless. All your doing is diluteing your new oil.

I would just send it away to be recycled with the used oil.

You work at a parts counter, you must get a discount on oil???
There is no reason to use 20+ year old oil!!!!

Advertise it as classic car oil for flat tappet engines and charge twice the current price. I know I would put it in my classic Corvette.

Ralph.

It would be great for an older car, such as on old 80's or 70's plow truck. SJ is not all that bad. SH on the other hand?

What year did they go to SL?

SJ: 1996-2001
SL: 2001-2004
SM: 2004-now

Why is everyone balking at using SJ oil? I've still got a couple of gallons sitting on my shelf that I use sporadically. It didn't hurt my engine eight years ago and I'm certain that it's not hurting it now.

I'd like for the OP to post some pics of the bottles he has. The few bottles of SJ rated GTX I have don't look much different from the SL or SM bottles IMO, much less "Old School eighties text" and whatnot.

Funny thing is during that time period it didn't hurt any car/truck if the OCI was followed. I'm sure someone has a vintage car/truck from that time period that could easily take it off your hands if you didn't want to do with it what others here have suggested. If you do give it away just suggest they shake it up before pooring it in. I'm willing to bet its still good.

Going thru the garage just yesterday I found a qt of Mobil 1 10W-30 SE. It's going into the mower next year.

Well, kind of off topic, but your poor lawnmowers.

My lawnmower gets Amsoil XL 5w-20 and has rewarded me with about a 30% improvement in fuel economy (best I can tell and I didn't believe it myself until I repeatedly used about 1/3 less per cut this summer).

I saved the oil cost in fuel easily this summer.

It had straight 30 weight in it (Castrol).

hope you have a liquid cooled mower, and are easy on it with that thin oil!
