GTX Magnatec Is Back

Well there we have it.

If they used the same part number, now I wonder if the silver bottle GTX was still actually Magnatec. Rats, I missed my chance, silver bottle is disappearing as well.
I don't like it. Now I will spell it out.
You are ordering a product you will get switched to some product you didn't order and you get to pay double the price...not cool..

Silver bottle takes the place of Magnatec but has no titanium in it.

Check AutoZone, there is a current oil change special they are currently running. But yes I agree GTX FS is dead now and seems they have already shifted away from that and pushing Edge and the GTX HM.

Local Walmart has the 0w20
KC I think wants 5w30?

I was just on their website and they only list 0w20 and 5w20 available for shipping. It wasn't showing at first but then I had to uncheck the pickup in store option.

I guess that leaves AutoZone, I'll have to see if the one here even has it, I think they extended the Restore & Protect for another month, I'd like to have at least one more on hand.

I ran the more expensive, black bottle, Castrol Edge 10w-30 on a Toyota 4runner 3RZ-FE with 290k. Did an 8k OCI with it. Very impressed with that oil. The engine ran smooth, strong, and quiet. The oil did get quite dark, pretty quickly, but nothing to get nervous about, in my view. Overall, the car seemed to "like" that oil, compared to most others.

Very interested to try the silver, Castrol GTX FS, for the next round with that engine. The Castrol Edge black was a bit pricey, imho. QSFS is cheaper at Wally World, and the car runs superb with it, as well.

It's called bait & switch, on Amazon I bought AC Delco cold climate power steering fluid for my truck but instead they sent me the regular version. I'm surprised that Castrol would use the same part number for the two different oils, it doesn't make any sense. As I said earlier the discontinued oil at Amazon is way overpriced, you would think they would want to move it to free up space in their warehouse for other items. I noticed the exact same thing on Amazon when RGT was discontinued the price substantially increased as well.

I'll try to visit AutoZone this weekend to see if they have any of the GTX FS in stock.

I finally got my 99 Civic out yesterday from being parked since Dec., I put the battery charger on for a few days but then I didn't want to just idle it for a few min so I let it run for around 45 min and then took it out to top off the fuel tank and drove it for 15 miles. I didn't notice anything with the cold start whatsoever, I don't know if motor oils have gotten that much better but I remember back in the late 90's it would make noise and knock until it warmed up, dealer called it piston slap where the aluminum pistons expand when they get hot and fills the gap in the cylinders. I thought from sitting for 2 months it would at least make some noise.

I'm sold on the Magnatec and it's a shame they discontinued it. IMO they don't really have anything that's replaced it, if they would've taken those properties and added them to the GTX FS or Edge then yeah. I am willing to try the Edge, says it's rated for 10k miles and Honda calls for 7,500 mile changes which should be a breeze.

I did try Syntec in my 97 years ago around early 00's or so, it was a synthetic blend. I remember that I was trying to curb some oil consumption issues and used the VW oil which was a 5w40, this was way before any of the Euro oils that are available now.

The original Magnatec was great stuff. Probably one of the most consistently quiet running oils I've tried. It was especially noticeable in our KIA at start up, which was notoriously rackety.

Supposedly the silver bottle GTX was its replacement, but I never got around to trying it. I don't think it had the same magic or it would have caught on here.
I agree. I really liked the original semi-synthetic Magnatec, I too found it super smooth and quite. I often caught myself glancing down when stopped at a red light, to check my engine was still running (it was). Nothing else did that.

They then brought out the full synthetic Magnatec. I tried that too, but it wasn’t the same.

Luckily we still get both in Australia.

Our original Magnatec from decades ago was 10W40 semi-synthetic. You can still get it. It’s Euro A3/B4 rated, but only SN. The Magnatec full synthetics carry the newer SP and Dexos certificates.

In the quiet start up / runs smooth department , I’m having good performance with the newer M1 5W30 EP in both the Kia Seltos and Hyundai Sonata in my signature . Also , Valvoline Advanced 5W30 was quiet / ran smooth .

According to Castrol, both GTX FS and Edge have the intelligent molecules just like Magnatec did. Edge is their best and strongest oil. Someone on here posted the direct quote from Castrol Customer Service a while back.

I've read that thread but honestly I don't believe it, for one that is the only topic on the whole internet that even mentions Edge and intelligent molecules together. I believe that the Castrol rep didn't really know what they were really talking about or it was just an automated response that pushes you to try their other products. If you go-to their website they don't mention it for Edge or GTX FS and it's not even in their PDS files. What I do believe is if they did have it in there then it would certainly be mentioned somewhere.

https://www.castrol.com/en_us/unite.../motor-engine-oil-viscosity-grades/0w-20.html

On their website in literally one sentence they even mention it for GTX FS - "Castrol GTX FULL SYNTHETIC 0W-20 motor oil liquid engineered with intelligent molecules that protect, providing superior wear protection"

And when you click on their GTX FS it doesn't even mention it any further than previously before. I checked the other viscosity grades and only for 0w20, I just find it hard to believe that the even if one grade has it then why wouldn't they include it for the others, so they're going to put them in 0w20 but not 5w20, 5w30?

Yes, Castrol is funny that way. They had this great product that many folks on here loved and they really promoted the intelligence of their molecules. Then they get rid of Magnatec, replace it with GTX F/S, claim it has the same intelligence but barely mention it. Then they reply to a question and claim Edge has the same level of intelligence, or more, but don't promote that aspect at all. I guess at the end of the day, it's all marketing anyway. Pennzoil promotes the heck out of GTL, but does it really make any difference? Will my car's engine last any longer if it has intelligent molecules in it, or GTL, or just plain 'ol oil?

I found a few jugs of the original SS version in my basement. I have FS too.

From member Shannow:
"Years ago, I was at a dinner, and sitting next to one of the Castrol chemists who was involved in the early testing of the magnatec.

He stated categorically tht it works.
Their test protocol on the test engines was
* baseline (Mobil 1 actually).
* flushing oil.
* test oil (magnatec)
* flushing oil
* baseline oil.

The magnatec made a measurable difference...then the "clinging" aspect allowed it to make a measurable difference in both the subsequent and baseline tests...they lost their (up to that point) repeatable bookend."
