You know I've never been a Valvoline guy but your question prompted me to look at the pds and just based on the VI and flash point I'd say it looks better than PYB on paper. Dont knwo if that translates to real world wear or if it makes it seem like your engine likes it. I also have to say that I like the honesty in their webpage and pds. They give you a lot of data that castrol never would about GTX, VI, TBN ect.

FYI I was looking at premium 5w30

Few years back Castrol was pretty proud of their GTX and gave more data on it, but something happened and they are real skimpy with it now.....dunno

they expect us to think with our dipsticks.

Well it seems to me, that we should consider the PDS data for all motor oil brands. To have an effective discussion the data should be organized by Type(Conventional, Synthetic or Blend) then Grade(mono or multi viscosity). The Product Data Sheets that I've seen have lots of useful information, but some people don't know how to understand and interpret the information. I tend to believe that the viscosity @ 40C and 100C would be the most important aspect of oil performance as viscosity is how well the oil sticks to the metal parts it comes in contact with. Correct me if I'm wrong but oil that doesn't stick very well to the engine parts isn't doing a good job of lubricating. As far as 10w-30 conventional goes, I'm going to stick with Valvoline based on the PDS viscosity data.

They are both good oils. I've run GTX for years and I would use Valvoline WB with no reservation. If I went out to buy one tomorrow I'd pick whichever of the two was cheaper. Most likely I'd wind up coming home with Supertech though. In researching these using the PQI website, Supertech is looking just as good to me and its cheaper than both. For me:

Cheap (but good) syn in winter for better cold flow and faster lube;

Supertech dino in the summer because I don't do extended OCIs and it looks just as good as the majors, but consistently cheaper than any of them.

Yeah, I have a 2002 Corolla LE and was using Castrol GTX 10W-30 but then the gulf oil spill happened and I didn't like how BP was treating my neighbours on the gulf coast, so I switched to Valvoline. Not to mention the horrible safety record BP (Big Profits) has. I like Valvoline's commitment to the consumer and the environment. Buy the Valvoline because its money that stays in America. I've noticed the price of GTX has gone up $2.50 for the 5qt. jug at wally world and that's clearly BP passing the cost of the gulf clean up to the consumer. Why should the consumer have to bail out BP for poor management? I vote with my dollar bill (for whatever its worth) and I choose Valvoline!
