group 4 synthetics

Okay. Many brands of synthetics use Group 1 as an additive carrier and if only used for that purpose, it's not considered a basestock.
The other thing was that it sounded like you didn't read the thread by Tom NJ that posted the results of his Gas Chromatography analysis on some M1 EP grades. Did you not see it? Yes he found a lot of what he thought was Group 3 in the oils he tested.

Ex-Mobil has added to the confusion of what their product is made from. They have made zero effort at clarification. In fact, their comments seem to confirm the fears it has changed to group III. Having said that, I don't think anyone is saying that ex-Mobil 1 is made of group III and therefore it is junk. I know that is not my point. Rather I think I can buy a decent group III at a better price. In fact, I have done so with PP. I have made this switch due in large part to ex-mobil’s comments and lack of attempt to clarify what it is they are selling. When German Castrol fans (of which I am one) wanted to know what their oil was made of, tests were done and conclusions were made. GeorgeCLS has stepped up to do additional testing on ex-Mobil 1. The jury is still out. Many of us have had to make decisions based on available evidence as oil changes became due. I am happy with my decisions, I am sure those who choose to stick it out with ex-Mobil will be happy too.

farrarfan1.. i was just trying to give you some guidance on your motor oil choice, i see you use Mobil 1. Mobil just loves consumers like you buying there oils year after year even when there are much better choices available right off the shelf. And BTW i have 21 years experience formulating engine lubricants for gas and diesel service....HOW ABOUT YOU.

I have no experience whatsoever in formulating oil, which is precisely why I don't lecture people about their choice of oil or give anyone recomendations on what they should put in their engines. I don't have that kind of knowledge and am not presumptuos enough to pretend like I do just because I've read a few posts on a message board.I also don't pretend to have enough knowledge to "interpret" UOA's and make recomendations with no training whatsoever. If Mobil loves people like me, so be it. They must likewise love TomNJ because he still uses their product. That is more reassuring to me than the endless parade of hand wringing victims trying to stick it to Mobil based on the results of 2 tests and a bunch of speculation.
