Sorry, but I can't see "Pearl" driving a Fusion...maybe the Camry, but not the Fusion.

I agree. That Fusion looks a little more on time then the Camry.

My daughter's boyfriend calls them "Q-tips" ..not pearls. I keep looking for my "distinguished grey" to turn into shock white. I wonder what he'll say then

Have you seen them side by side?
The Fusion's gril is really nice, but the rest of the car is very generic, worse than the platform donor Mazda Six. The rear is pure garbage.
The Camry looks like a more upscale car, without cheap pretentions.

Q-tips. White on top always wear white shoes.. AKA Snowbirds. Pearl is an endearing term to old ladies (when Pearl was a common name)

As far as up to date, I think the flat top grill on the ford looks early 90's, reminds me too much of a mercury sable I had as a company car that did not leave me with a good impression(It did leave me stranded on a lonely stretch of highway near the rivera checkpoint

) I think I am jaded.

That's true. My Hitachi angle grinder burned out on me. I'll never buy a Honda.

Actually the early Mexican build Fusions have exhibited very poor fit and finish.
The US built Mazda 6 has never experienced those problems.

BTW, the article should read "Great Job Mazda".
Mazda has delivered a great, highly flexible platform.

Early build new Civics have several electrical and mechanical problems. Early 2002 Camrys couldn't seem to keep door hinges bolted to the frame. I think there was a string of bad SR5 V-6 motors in late 90's 4Runners. Have yet to see a new model car from any manufacturer leave the factory without some problems.

The Fusion is being build of the same platform and mechanical internals as the Mazda 6 that's been on the market for over 2 years.
There is no excuse for the misaligned body panels, doesn't matter how new the model is.
Have you seen the Korean cars lately? They might be cheap and not as refined but their sheet metal is almost always perfect.
It took Ford almost a whole year to solve the body gap problems on the Mexican build Focuses.

Are the Mazda3 and the Volvo S40 based on the same platform?

Yes they are, along with the second generation Ford Focus (not available in US - #@!#&% FoMoCo!!!

Gee ...roof lines ..even the window scheme. Sure looks like both of these are suitable for some low end market

The winner in the long run will be the camary...I remember the Ford contour...The wold class car...turned out to be a peice of junk...

Sure ..show me the Honda and Toyota Towncars. The Contour and the Escort it replaced are sold at a loss. I'm speculating on the Contour ..but every Escort made was just to allow the sale of the gas guzzlers. Sold below cost. They're throw away cars.

But when you think about it ...can you really imagine an add campain "The new Contour ..a piece of junk loss leader that allows people who make real money and like to drive big cars that get lousy gas mileage to buy our gas guzzler cars. Please ..help them out!"

I'd say that really wouldn't work.

You can walk through a dealership lot of any make you choose and find uneven body panels, orange peel paint jobs, loose window/door seals. It's taken Honda 10 years to fix their seatbelt issues...is that excuseable?

Issues with the buckles and tesioners go back years. Go though a list of recalls and TSB's and you'll see something to do with the seatbelts in almost every model. Honda also doesn't sell seatbelt extenders for those who are bit larger than the normal demographic. Virtually every other manufacturer either provides them upon request or at least has them available for sale. For a company that puts so much stock into the safety of its products that seems a bit out of character.

Looks like the aftermarket has it pretty well covered. See what Crutchfield has. Most of them are getting pretty good reviews, too.

i wish it was a small version of the 500.

How much smaller can they get? That svelt petite chic that they show on the commercials (the one with all the new line up in black in the background) must be 4'10 and 92 lbs soaking wet. I expected a shorter/lower version of a Crown Vic ..what I see is something substantially smaller.

The Fusion is a Mazda engineered car, not Ford. In fact it seems most of the better Fords aren't really Fords at all. Ford hasn't made a decent 4 cylinder or V6 in years.

About 2-cents per mile, give or take. Not enough to matter.
