Grease Monkeys at Wal-Mart

I love Wal Mart and have had many oil changes there without ever having a problem. I don't rely on anyone but me to choose my oil, but honestly, is there really a bad oil sold there? I think all, if not most, of the oils sold anymore are pretty solid.

I have had work done at new car dealers that suck. I worked at Sears as an installer and K-mart as an installer/light tech. Late 80s early 90s.

I know I made some mistakes, buy I did a pretty good job as a whole. I had some of the advisors and the manager choose me when needing work done on their car in the shop.

There are good and bad in all shops. Or at least most shops.

Yes I agree that Greasemonkey is not kool.

Not true, I can still get one from my car where I'm located at.

I spoke with managers from two different AAP stores about the TotalGrip AAP filter. Seems that it is available for "fleet and commercial customers" and no longer on display. Both said that it is stocked in the back and you can ask for it

FWIW, major oil companies run on about 8-10% gross profit on sales....far less than other major corporations like....Walmart etc. (I'm sure you also know that Pennzoil is owned by Shell...)
But hey, if it makes ya feel better, enjoy!

there does seem to be some condescending remarks about wal mart workers here...if all you have going on in your life is studying motor oil and touting your superiority over lube techs and their thankless jobs, then that makes you number one in loser department

I have had nothing but excellent from WalMarts mechanics. A tire rotation even brings out the torque wrench. I have been to several WM shops for various service and often watch the mechanics work. They have always done a creditable job in my opinion and the price is very fair.

Yeah, I would never judge anyone doing quick lube service harshly until there is a blatant issue. My guess is those guys ~like~ what they are doing and trying as hard as the can to get it right. It's not their fault they just haven't happened onto this site yet and that API as well as the oil cos do nothing to educate the public on specs or even visc grades. Working for W*M is no party either.

i worked at a sears auto center for 2 years, both service writing and turning wrenches, ive also worked at a ford dealer in both parts, and as a tech.
its great to know everything about oil, and it is real good hearing different opinions from people about oil and other car related topics. however, when you do the job day in and day out, you dont really care about specifics, just want to finish the car youre working on and start on the next one, hopefully nothing will break and the customer will be happy. working in a parts dept, i get to hand out filters and bottled oils(when specified) to techs. they really dont care what they get as long as it will work and not result in a comeback. people always come to me when theres a weird fluid question on non ford/mazda products because i usually know what to use on that application.

You're not buying these store brand filters for your Infinity are you? Those Q45's are some pretty sweet cars; why not the factory filter?

Well said. All that technicians care about is that the part will not cause a comeback.

In my opinion, some WM managers do not properly interview the applicants properly, lack control, lack knowledge, training, etc. WM TLE has a very limited training program. One person stated he performed hundreds of oil changes. As he was in the process of being fired, he admitted he only watch his pal change oil once. You do have WM techs who care or really know what he/she is doing. It's like any other place, it comes down to the people working who provides the level of quality work/services.

China-Mart's TLE dept. didn't put the oil filter back on tight on my mother-in-laws 2008 Toyota RAV4, and it unscrewed about 1/8 of an inch and most of the oil came out of the car. It had 8k miles at the time and it was the cars second oil change. Obviously she will never use China Mart again.

Car is fine, no problems now. It was not driven when the oil started flying on the way home from China-Mart. My father-in-law drove down the street, found the problem, retightened the filter, took it back to China-Mart, and they changed the oil all over again for free.

This doesn't make sense to me. Can you please explain what you are trying to say?

Who cares if a guy who was getting fired only watched one oil change from his pal?

Yeah, I tried the ST filter this last go around because of the great reviews plus seeing them cut open. I stay away from the OEM China made filter. I saw one cut open and it looked worse than the orange can filter. That's why I stay away from them. I'm going to use the Purolator next oci.

Let me tell you, I was quite fed-up with the auto dept. of my local walmart after seeing their performance yesterday.

I go to drop off 3.5 gallons of oil and three filters. I park in front of the auto dept. door to the side (not marked, just no dashes) just because I figured I would run in, drop off at counter, and leave right away... Not the case, this old cranky women comes out yelling I can't park there and all this, so I tell her that I am just dropping off the oil and leaving right away. Then she doesn't seem to mind and we go inside. Next, she says I can't just drop it off and I have to sign paperwork for it (why?). So she begins to look for it... And look for it... Keeps looking... Goes on for ten minutes with the help of the three other people behind the counter. She then says rudely while we find it move your car.

Anyway, I move the car and go back inside. Wait another fifteen minutes because they call more people to find this "binder". So now, they have five morons trying to find a binder. Around twenty five minutes at least since I walked in, and they finally find the binder (right under cash register in the cabinet), where they DID look. Regardless, they let me sign it and I was on my way.

It was SO unorganized, and the way they treated other customers while I was there waiting was really disrespectful. Some lady had a flat and she asked nicely to the mechanic guy what was wrong. He goes and mumbles without eye contact that it was just a hole and he don't know (really rudely). She look kinda shocked how bad his answer really was, and more so how he said it. Uncalled for.

They are a complete joke at my wal-mart's at least. I called a few looking for a specific oil in the 5-gal container and they go "look" and forget about me on the phone, I call back and they tell me they have it. I drive out to find they lied to me...

They hire people who don't know how to simply walk over to see if they have a product available in THEIR department. It's a joke, really.

I would not want them working on my vehicle, ever. At least not in Cleveland...

Also, why did I have to sign paperwork for me dropping off the oil, with my address and name? Is there a point?

If the repair works and no comeback is what it is all about.
