Got us a new shell gas station

My joke response is....
Maybe the gas station was built with airport rental car return yards to follow.
Those stations are always psycho high as the rental car companies fee for refueling is even higher!

In Southern Ontario the common price today is around $1.55 per liter which works out to $4.09 US per gallon. Definitely higher than the $2.97 per gallon I paid a few weeks ago in Western NY state but nothing like $9 😳
1.55 a liter works out to close to $6 for a US gallon. Not $9 but a lot higher than $4

We have a major Shell refinery mere miles from where we live so we have Shell stations everywhere and many people here work for Shell. I did not, work for them, I retired from a major chemical company. I follow news probably more than most folks yet I can not find an answer to a question about not just Shell but all of the major oil/fuel companies. Who can (briefly-no politics) explain why , how the price of our gas has plumetted in the past 6-8 months?

If they posted lowball or even normal prices, motorists would be trying to buy gas at a station that was not yet open for business.
I agree with you and @tburke. It is meant to discourage people from trying to use the station, before it is open. I've seen it before. As high as fuel prices are in California, there would be no purpose to opening up a new gas station, that is priced so high as to discourage all sane customers.

Weekly oil prices peaked in mid 2022 and have been falling ever since. We have increased production here in the US, Iran and Russia continue to ship oil even under sanction, and global demand is less - especially in China. Realize that the price of oil is determined around the margins - so a small supply increase or decrease can change the price drastically. The Saudis are holding back about 2M BPD of supply (about 2% of the entire worlds usage) in an attempt to keep prices up.

Thats the first part - the second is refining margins. Refining margins are falling also - also mostly due to demand - and again, a small change in demand can have a big change in price.

The fact that Shell is still building new gas stations in California shows that they do not believe ICE vehicles will disappear there any time soon.
Yes but what cant be good I dont think, and is sure going to hurt many Cal citizens is the fact that several oil companies have recently announced they are shutting down some really large, long time operating refineries. So hurts Cal people two ways, jobs lost and sure to raise fuel costs. I wonder if that will not just affect Cal since no new refineries have been built on US soil in near 50 years. Maybe longer. ****NO POLITICS Please**** Not just Cal. Also read story yesterday of a major refirnery in Texas shutting down and laying off 400 workers.
The refinery will be converted into a plastics recycling facility. So...... gas prices all over may really be affected with us losing several at near same times.

Its there state and their choice. The California contingent will tell you that your wrong and they have lots of refining, etc. But the price speaks for itself. 🤷‍♂️

I thought that gas in Canada was priced by the liter.
It is, but many of us visit the US and are aware that our prices here are higher. I always fill up with gas when I cross over the border into Niagara Falls NY (which I do about every 4-6 weeks) and I know I’m saving a substantial amount of money.

I totally get that, but I thought the premise of this was sticker shock because the size of the numbers.

I do remember visiting Canada and getting a bit confused when produce was priced by the pound.

I worked for Exxon over 50 years ago. Even back then, the industry was closing down smaller refineries while making the remaining refineries larger. What is important is not the number of refineries. Rather, it is the total refining capacity.
