Goodyear: Just a name???

I have a couple of Goodyear tyres on my car - made in China, so I think they are a brand. I don't have a problem with Chinese tyres, at least here in New Zealand - they have to meet a standard to be imported here, I've used and sold them with no problems. Chinese Goodyears ? Seem good enough for me.

They would be to expensive to import from US to NZ, I'm sure they have factories in EU too, to cover that area.
Where is NZ you are located? Coming to Auckland this Sunday, wonder about do I need warm jacket or not.

I'm 100km south of Auckland (colder) and it's T shirt weather, but a low system will hit on friday, looks like it will still be here on sunday, you will need warm and rain proof clothing. Auckland is 4 seasons in a day.

10 years ago I was selling Barum tyres, they are a Continental brand - I saw them made in Czechoslovakia, which is Barum home teritory, but also made in Germany, France, and South Africa, Continental then took over Sime and I have seen them made in Malaysia now too. Tyres are brand names for a market segment, several brand names will come out of one factory - destined for a market segment and price range.

I had a set of Goodyear Assurance and got about 40,000 miles on them when 3 of the 4 developed broken belts. I was told that it was because they have a softer belt in them to give a better ride. But they were rated for 80,000. These were not the first Goodyears to break a belt prematurely. I have had it happen with Eagle GT's and numerous others. I know a few engineers that work there and they told me there is a known belt issue and GY just keeps ignoring it hoping their name and OEM reputation will keep people coming. I did have a set of Invicta's that worked ok. Decent in snow and wearability and the only set of GY that I owned that did not break a belt. They were on a the only subcompact I ever owned too. Replaced them with a set of Mastercraft a value line of Cooper that sucked and wished I had kept the others. The MC wore out in less than 20,000 miles and alignment checked out fine. They were rated for 50,000. Complained to the dealer that recommended and sold them to me and he said no one else ever complained. I said I am complaining and you and MC have lost another customer due to poor customer service and walked away. They were completely bald like slicks on a Geo Metro 3 cylinder. Not exactly like I was out smoking tires daily.

As a good general rule, the tires that come with most new cars tend to be very mediocre, if even that. The above mentioned Goodyear Integrity tires fall into that category. More expensive Goodyear tires are much better than Integrity. I would put new Goodyear Integrity tires on my beater again, assuming that they were still made in USA.

The Assurance line up is probably the best tires you can get from Goodyear. So far I've owned/bought 3 sets of comfortred touring , 1 set of tripletreds and 1 set of tripletred all seasons. Havent been disappointed yet.

Comfortred Touring All Seasons : very comfy and quiet ride, excellent treadwear, very good dry and winter weather traction, good wet traction. Slightly softer steering response upon initial turn in, very predictable mid corner responses. Suits vehicles like Camry, Accord, Fusion etc. Good option for a louder econobox as well.

Tripletred : One word, immediate. The steering response of this tire is amazing. So is dry wet and snow traction. These tires shine is wet conditions. Its like the water isnt there. Cons include rough ride, higher road noise due to directional tread and stiff sidewall and subpar treadlife on certain vehicles. Discontinued model now.

Tripletred All-Season : Best way to describe this tire is to think if the comfortred and tripletred had a baby and it got the good qualities of both parents. This is a smooth riding, quieter than the older tripletreds, grippy all season tire. They are louder than your comfortreds but considerably quieter than the older tripletreds. Small bumps are shrugged off and larger impacts are damped slightly less than comfortreds. Cannot comment on the treadwear as havnt noticed any. Wet traction is as good as the old tripletreds. Excellent all season option for heavier rwd vehicles or for vehicles struggling to cut through the snow. Evolving traction grooves maintain the excellent all weather traction till the very end of the tire life.

Hope this helps !

I prefer the softer ride of Comfortreds to the Michelins. They have a 80,000 mile warranty. DT gives me a prorate if they wear out early. Actually,I want them to wear out every 5 years so I can get my prorate and a new set of tires.

I love the way the regulars on here call this "borderline trolling" and about 2/3 the rest of the thread say they have had "mostly bad" experiences with Goodyear.

Does anyone remember the race in 2006 or so where the GOODYEAR tires were so bad the race took twice as long? NASCAR I think? It was not "most tires" it was GOODYEAR.

Just sayin.

Probably was getting at that, as a tire, you can do better.. like Pirellis..

Oh yea ? What do you think about Michelin tires given that they weren't even allowed to be used in an F1 race in indy due to failures in practice ? Or the current pirelli tires that keep delaminating in F1? What are your thoughts on the whole Ford Explorer/ Firestone fiasco? Man all those tires must have been secretly built by goodyear right ?

Here's something positive, the first tire to drive on the moon was manufactured by Goodyear.

Every company has good or bad products. Just because one person didn't like one particular product does not mean their entire product line is bad.

bourne : During the recession I had heard that (smartly) GoodYear had cut back on production ... How are production levels now for Goodyear - are they back to higher production levels ?

Not sure. I do know we havent come across as many products that were back ordered as we did last year or the year before that. I also do know that the whole country is down as far as tire sales go ( including other manufacturers/retailers ) and recently Goodyear revamped the pricing on their Assurance and Wrangler line ups to reflect a heavy discount. This is one of the best times to price tires at a Goodyear store near you, they are being very aggressive when it comes to pricing their tires.

And the Fortera Silent Armor for SUVs?

They are really good tires as well. We use them on our 2wd shop trucks all year round. They are a favorite re-purchase item. I know customers who are on their 3rd set of silentarmours. Regular rotation and alignment has seen customers get well past the 50k treadlife warranty on these tires.

This is certainly true of me with certain things. (GM isn't one of them BTW) but with Goodyear it is. Premium tires with a 18K treadlife is an oxymoron. It was half a lifetime ago, but....

I am with you 100%. I have had so many horrendous GY's tires come on new vehicles that I just can't even give them a chance with non OEM replacements. Actually, when I buy a new vehicle now if I see GY's on it I do everything I can to get the dealer to swap them to something else before agreeing to buy the vehicle. Nothing but garbage comes from GY on new vehicles.

The only good GY's I have any experience with were on my Sister's Impala. While they wore out fairly quick( typical GY )they actually were good while they lasted. Unfortunately, they wanted 2 arms and a leg and a half for the same tires when we were replacing them. NOT! My Brother likes their AT's for his plow truck and I can't for the life of me figure out why? He pays so much more for some GY AT's that wear out in 2 years than he would pay for some AT's from other brands that would perform as well or better and actually last a while. I don't get it.

GY may offer a few decent tire models but I have never run them and I have never seen them be priced competitively( discounts and deals aside )with good tires from other brands. IMO calling them "Goodforayear" or "Junkyear" is very accurate. What really gets me is the price of their OEM tires when you go to replace them. Tires known to SUCK( tread wear, traction, ride, etc... )but that carry a huge price tag. I don't get people who would willingly replace an OEM GY tire with the same thing at the ridiculous prices they charge.

If GY actually does offer a tire in the size you need that is truly a good tire expect to pay more for it than any other tire out there 99.9% of the time. You can always get something as good for a fraction of the cost. I just see no compelling reason to ever buy their garbage tires or even their so called "good ones"(

Lots of opinion in here.

Personally, I just purchased a second set of the GM TPC-spec Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max tires that came on my Cruze. The originals have worn well, done everything I've asked them, and I got the replacements for much less than anything else I was looking at.

Not sure if I should credit GM or Goodyear for that one...

I find this the most interesting quote of the thread.

Stated different, this would be that blame for BAD tires should be put on the tire manufacturer or the vehicle manufacturer? It seems most people vote for the tire manufacturer.

Precisely! Somehow people fail to accept that OEM tires are NOT built to how the tire manufacturer would make that particular tire if left to their own. OEM tires are tuned EXACTLY to what the VEHICLE manufacturer wants them to do, not what the TIRE manufacturer wants to make. This is more true today that ever, with the high mpg requirements and the need for dealerships to make money off customers faster ( ie. low tread life ).

This is no different than companies like Clarion, Alpine, Bose etc making car stereo equipment for the car manufacturers. Read an article recently about how Alpine for the longest time refused to put their name on the OEM speakers they produced for other companies since they were made with a price in mind and did not reflect well on the performance of their aftermarket products.

And before anyone asks why GY makes OEM tires when they know they wont perform as well, its about money. We live in a capitalist county and everyone likes to make money. OE fitments account for a sizeable chunk of their income and is free publicity ( as proven in the case of our fellow member with the Chevy Cruze, he bought another set of the same GY tires as the ones which came with his car. )
