The horror stories abound. Even I have a Wrangler RT/S on my S10. (Yes I have mismatched tires on it, the back axle matches.)

But just how bad IS Goodyear? I had a set of Eagle HPs - again, one axle. Wow, were they awesome.

They also seem to be really expensive, almost Pirelli high, another brand where it seems all but one of its products (P Zero Nero) falls short of the fervent hype.

Don't know what you mean, "Just a name." Goodyear is still an independent company (I think...) not owned by one of the other giants like Michelin or Bridgestone/Firestone.

That said, I've never had a Goodyear tire that I truly liked. Our 93 Vision TSi came with Eagle GA's- loud, not very grippy, fast-wearing. Replaced them with BFG Touring T/As that were cheaper and better in every way. 08 Ram came with Wrangler HP's- I didn't even let them wear out, they were so bad. Replaced them with Michelin LTX MS2's, which are admittedly expensive, but a far, far better tire. And now my SRT-8 came with very expensive Z-rated and staggered (larger in the rear) Eagle F1's. They don't exactly suck, but they are loud and don't hold balance great. And other Challenger driversI know have been lucky to get 20k miles out of them- I just had mine rotated (side-to-side) and rebalanced at 6k miles and 1/3 the tread is gone on the rears. Right on schedule :-/ I plan on replacing them with BFG Comp2's unless something better comes up between now and when the time comes.

PS / OT - just finished another 9-hour trip in the SRT.... 25.3 mpg this time, and I'm FAR less tired than after an 8-hour day in my office chair. I need to get a job that involves me driving this car all over the country. :-)

Honestly, threads like this are borderline on trolling.

Your question is ridiculously vague. Every company makes good products, mediocre products, and bad products. Sometimes they're a good value, sometimes they're overpriced. Sometimes they're overhyped, sometimes they're total sleepers.

In the end YOU as a consumer need to do objective research and buy what fits your needs -- ignore heresay and fan-boyism. I've bought Goodyear, Kumho, Continental, Michelin, Bridgestone, and BFGoodrich for my cars. Why? Because at the time they had a tire matching what I needed/wanted.

Huge +1.

Kelly is owned by Goodyear. They are our value line up. Like someone said, not unlike every other tire manufacturer, Goodyear has good and bad products in their line up. There are certain tire models I would never recommend to a customer, now Comfortreds/SilentArmours on the other hand are some of the strongest sellers we have.

Kudos to you for the call out on this.

I have the Goodyear Comfortreds on the Cobalt... Love them.
I have had Bridgestone Blizzaks... Loved them.
I have General snow tires... Love them.
I have had Goodyear TripleTreds... Loved them.
I have Michelin Latitudes on the Equinox... They're Ok.

Best advice I got on tires was that many OEM tires aren't incredible in many regards. As stated above many manufacturers make great tires & some not so great tires.

Worst tires I've ever owned? Goodyear Eagle RS-As.

OE on my wife's Eclipse GT and PT Cruiser GT.

Abysmally bad tires. Short lived, poor dry traction and non-existent wet traction.

The Kumho 711s and Riken Raptors that replaced them were 10X better and those aren't exactly good tires.

On a dollar for dollar basis, some of the best tires I ever owned were Fierce Instinct ZR UHPs. A Goodyear product. They were noisy but they stuck as well in the dry as Bridgestone Potenza RE040s and were superior in wet or icy conditions to the Potenzas

One would think that the better tires would be labled Goodyear and the lesser tire would be less expensive and labled with the off name. Not so much.

Eagle RS-As are expensive.

When tire molding technology takes a leap (new molds and associated technology is very expensive), the Name Brand tires often get the latest hardware and the older technology is used to make quality tires in the companies related tire lines. Cam molding (center mold line) replaced with segmented molding (across the tread mold line) which most recently was replaced with more complex molding technology. Michelin is a leader in developing some of there advances, but Goodyear, Bridgestone and others soon follow, sometimes with their own advances in molding technology. There are some very good tires out there today even from some of the lesser known venders. And, as noted, some of the majors and some of the OEM offerings are not so hot. Read the reviews! For a superb price I just picked up a set of not quite state-of-the-art Goodyear Eagle GT's from my 2000 Audi A6. Great tire at a great price (just not at a Goodyear dealer that is).

I've had good and bad goodyear tires over the year, mostly bad. Most recently I've bought the GY Comfortred Touring tires as I saw that they were ranked #1 on tirerack. So far I'm very happy with these tires, but I've only had for less than a year.

A lot of people, if they have a bad experience with a particular product from a company, can't get past that and with confidence purchase another product from that same company.

This is certainly true of me with certain things. (GM isn't one of them BTW) but with Goodyear it is. Premium tires with a 18K treadlife is an oxymoron. It was half a lifetime ago, but....

I used to work for Goodyear. Their Integrity tires can be horrible.
Triple Thread are great, buddy of mine had it on Passat, Manager had them on his car and they lasted him for about 90k miles.
I had Eagle F1 all season on 03 v6 Altima, they were great performance tires, little to hard for daily comfy driving, but i could go 80+ in downpour with confidence on hwy or up to 65 in 1 inch snow laying on hwy. They lasted about 45k miles.
My step mom has Comfort Threads on her 03 Golf TDI forever, and loves it much much more than OE it came with.
W140 MB I had recently came with Goodyear tires, I forgot which, they were in horrible shape from sitting to long, plus w140 chews tires fast, so I changed them out quickly.
Finally Bimmer in my sig has Response Edge onces since October, so far they are good and were on good sale

Many police cars I've seen have Eagle LS tires, most Fire dep truck have Goodyear tires, well even fricking moon hovers have special GoodYear tires.

yep...+2.

Had good tires from Goodyear...and bad...since my experience buying Goodyears spans 30+ years...I recommend www.tirerack.com surveys...

I am done buying Goodyears. I want to support them as they are an American made tire. I nearly always get about half the tires rated mileage and they want to give me $25 toward my next $200 tire. Never had a bad Michelin or Cooper. Only thing worse than GY is Kumho. Avoid these at all costs.

Beware of a brand that is "made by" a brand you like. That brand could be their value brand. I bought some tires for my Jeep, they were a brand they said that were made by Cooper. Were OK, but did not last that long. Ones with the Cooper name on them are better. I am sure its the same for other brands.

TireRack has a ton of reviews. I would read their reviews regardless of where you buy.

I liked the OEM Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max tires on my Cruze enough to purchase a second set. They're all right tires, and for the price I got them for nothing else came close.
