Hi,
well the Goodwood Revival starts tomorrow. I've just spent many hours today talking lubricants with Benz, Auto Union and other Technicians. In the next few days I'll try and provide some insight as to what is used in these pre 1966 era race cars

I can say thet we will never know what is used in the priceless Benz engines as it is especially formulated by a specialised lubricant supplier. Of course this is because of the multi-mix fuel used

It is also common to use 15W-40 HDEOs (even in a 1934 Bugatti) in many engines and generally, mineral lubricants rule!

I hope this is of some interest

What I take away from that is that the lubrication demands of the engine aren't that high and the oil choice is simply not that important.

Doug whatever lubrication tidbits you can gleen are always interesting. Also I'm sure some are still using castor oils as you can always smell it in the air at vintage events although I know some "cheat" and just add it to the petrol as a top-end lube while still achieving the same odorous effect.

BTW you are really doing some globe hopping? Chicago last week-end and England this week-end... I can't wait to retire!

Hi,
other makes/events are being featured! Dan Gurney's cars are featured and the bikes get more exposure

Max revs for the Benz engines is 5k!!

Caster based oils are used where that was the original intent. That said, not all are Castrol!! I was bought up on the small of Castrol R........

Off to the races now - I'll provide more tidbits from time to time
