I have a 1984 Toyota Camry with the 4 cyl gasoline engine 180,000 miles. Have used Castrol since about 5,000 mi. Manual says 5 or 10w-30 in colder weather and 20w-50 in hot. Uses about 1/2 qt in 4,000 miles. I have kept on top of maintenance and do my own changes using Purolater oil filter. Usually change oil around 4-5,000 mi. All miles are highway. There is a minor oil leak in the head area. I would like to go to a possibly better oil for cold weather start up and extend the changes to about 6,000. I wouldn't want to make seals any worse with a regular syn, so I 'm looking at MaxLife blend with the seal treatment. What do you guys "in the know" think about trying MaxLife 10w-30 year round if oil usage doesn't get worse ?

Should be fine. Maxlife is usually thicker and swell seal better, so the leak should reduce or stop.

I think if you have time you should find out which gasket is leaking. My bet would be valve cover gasket or cam seals. If you know how to replace it, replacing it is the best choice to fix the root cause.

I agree on the gasket/seal suggestion. I replaced the valve cover gasket--not the problem. Coming out lower. A couple of years ago I had the valve stem seals and a lifter replaced. I really don't like anyone touching the engine besides me, but I can't do everything needed on an overhead cam design engine. Unfortunately anytime I have had it worked on (very few)---I see evidence that it was definitely worked on faster than I would have and I understand why they do.

Thanks to Everyone--

I use Mobil Extended Performance in another much newer vehicle. Are we talking the same stuff ? I read that current Mobil 1 doesn't have the seal leakage issues that were blamed on it in its early years, but I was unaware that Mobil made a synthetic for vehicles to start using in my case of 180,000 miles and 24 years old. I have had some seals replaced during water pump and timing belt replacement, but not all engine seals have been replaced.

i would auto RX it first with some dino oil for the clean/rinse stages..

then use maxlife full synthetic (or synthetic blend if you cant find full synthetic which is harder to find) after the rinse stage for the remainder of the vehicles life..

Ok-I need a little education at this point. Would the RX flush benefit the seals any or mainly just do a quick rid of buildup from inside the engine so the synthetic wouldn't get trashed out fast ? I have nearly always used Castrol with regular changes and the last time I had the valve cover off, (about 5,000 mi ago) it was clean. I do appreciate all the feedback.
