GM tells Bolt EV owners park away from vehicles in decks

the issue is keeping the fires put out, EVs present a different challenge than normal vehicle fires. teslas are well known mobile cremation stations

Each year, an estimated 171,500 highway vehicle fires occurred in the United States, resulting in an annual average of 345 deaths; 1,300 injuries; and $1.1 billion in property loss.

And the vast majority of fatal vehicle fires are still ICE related , 40% are not collision related.

It’s not that I don’t think EV fires need to be solved/reduced, but it’s overblown given the numerically small number of events.

The way to permanently solve EV fires is to change to inflammable cobalt free LIFEPO4 batteries that have been used in hobby EVs for nearly 2 decades. Tesla and other companies are slowly moving to less cobalt, less cobalt less fire, no cobalt = inflammable

Out of all 16m F150’s on the road
11083 of them lit up
And literally no one cares when a gas car lights on fire because it’s so common, news rarely covers a car fire unless a van full of orphans dies (actual unfortunate event 10 years back)

So no I don’t think that’s the same,
any way you cut it it’s worse.

EVs are under a magnifying glass lit up like the sun, any time a Tesla driver farts it’s news worthy for some reason, EVs dominating every aspect of the news over every insignificant non-event is just as irritating as the 24/7 JLO Benifer coverage, if I wanted to learn about what 50 somethings are doing there literally are thousands of them within a mile, don’t need to be bombarded by JLO by air, sea, phone, news, paper. Can’t avoid seeing her in any of my feeds. Thankfully she has yet to become interested in oil advertising.

I say this even though I’m interested in plug ins, it just seems like they have slow news days and have to make up something to discuss about them even when nothing important is happening

I’ve seen 2 car fires on my own street over the years, one quite minor and got put out (burned a bunch of crap in the engine compartment, like something spilled something on the manifold) other was pretty bad.

My own cobalt leaked a trail of gas down the road when a steel line rusted through under an aluminum heat wrap (brilliant design)
You said recent F150 fires. I think that refers to the 420 recalled to check and fix the starter motor connection. It isn’t hard to develop an alternate story. Of course out of 16 million F150’s of all ages there are going to be gas leaks and fires. Especially as they crash. What is being told not to park in the garage, a gas car or an EV? Find a gas car outlawed from garage parking. I have no qualms about a gas car at all. Another thing is my car has an exit handle that I can pull with my eyes closed. When people see trapped charred bodies in a Tesla which has no gas to ignite, they rightly get scared and it makes news. So the news about that should be suppressed? Sounds like news as in “new” to me. Like the cell phone fires. Who would have thought? Since it is now said gas cars are burning practically everywhere, with all kinds of numbers, even pictures, that wouldn’t be news anymore.

You talk of changing narratives but Tesla collision fires do occur also.
40% of gas cars that light up are not related to collision.

Ford has had a “Fire” problem since late 2017, hence the recall , the government is treating it with kid gloves even though it’s more likely than a Bolt fire

MY 2018-2021 Ford F-150s are up to 243 fires as of the last dataset available. On newer vehicles the “cause” is usually left out for years

The trouble with how many “recent “ vehicles light on fire is that the data is almost always 6 months plus old, easier to find “reliable numbers “ for the whole kabootle

All this said I am definitely not a Tesla fan, just see a lot of “bias” and focus away from things that are more important, like build quality, price, limitations, repairability, etc.
people just parrot the same nonsense as if Tesla is an Islamic religion and not just another transport appliance.

I have had no qualms about any gas car I have ever owned and I owned a lot of really old ones. No fires in so many decades. Never knew anyone having a car fire or worried about having one. It is not the same as these battery fires at all. I read they recalled 400 or so F150’s to fix the connection on the starter motor. You think that’s just the same?
You are a regular comedian! That is so funny! Gas cars catch on fire all the time! They leave patches of melted asphalt as evidence of the events.

In the late '90's, Ford recalled almost 8 million cars because of a faulty ignition switch the would keep power on continuously, resulting in the cruise control module overheating. On many occasions, this resulted in cars catching on fire.

The defect ended up in recalls that spanned over a decade of Fords. Everything from Lincoln Town Car, Expedition, Explorer, Bronco, Taurus, F150, F250, F350. And on and on. Ford even issued an advisory to owners of these vehicles to not park them in a garage, but instead park them outdoors and away from any structure.

Before all was over, over 500 vehicle fires were attributed to this defect. Even a few deaths resulted when homes were caught on fire while occupants slept, and the Ford in the garage overheated and caught on fire.

People recall all the time about the Pinto gas tank fire issue. But this issue was much more recent. And not small by any means. Ford was very slow to react. They masked the size of the issue by agreeing to recalls for only a model or two at a time, and limiting the years covered in each recall.

So yea, cars catch on fire. And not only Tesla and Bolt.

My Tesla has an exit handle too. There is a handle with a mechanical release right where you'd expect to find it. You're supposed to use the electric door release for a routine exit though.

I’d like to see more pictures of inside door release handles, especially Tesla models. There was a guy couldn’t get out of his on fire Tesla. He had to force the door open.

Thanks. We had a new Taurus, Windstar, E150, and a used F250 in the mid late 90’s. No words about fires or recalls. Ford did recalls and didn’t say forever not to park in the garage, but only until the recall was done, right? Imagine what a 85 kWh lithium ion could do over a 12 v lead acid battery. The Pinto never self ignited as I remember.
Now what is Tesla doing about recalls in comparison to Ford? imo they need to replace all the batteries on a let’s be safe and not kill anyone else basis. Also turn off all the auto pilots until they learn how to not kill anyone. Let’s just focus on the not killing anyone else aspect of it, not the stock price. Too harsh? 😆

Ford EV's are starting to come out (Mustang & F150's) that were designed from the ground up to be electric.

I’m hoping the used prices of these absolutely tank. I’d 100% buy a “cheap” one, store it in my backyard for a year and let GM put a brand new battery in it with a huge warranty attached. 👍🏻

Who's bringing the wieners and marshmallows ... ???

On another note, Elon Musk today tweeted that people who purchase the "Full Self Driving" option on Tesla cars can be "Lulled" into thinking that their car can actually drive itself!!
Gotta love that logic.

Musk is doing a lot of tweeting recently now that the NHTSA opened a full federal investigation just 3-4 weeks ago, into self-driving Tesla accidents and fatalities. Calls it Full Self Driving just the same.

It is hard for me to fathom that the owners aren't demanding loaner cars w free gas if they get a ICE during this fiasco. I would be walking a picket in front of the dealer. The slack GM gets from the government agencies is unreal, while they seem to be punish innovation from companies like Tesla(just an example)

Do they give free electricity with a Bolt? GM is getting no perks from the government about loaner cars.
I have to admit I fell into the deflection trap again. The topic wasn’t gasoline car fires, and not even Tesla fires.
