GM isn't so bad!

For all of the bitching that goes on about gas prices, I sure don't see people changing their driving habits very much.

Actions do speak louder than words, and from what I have seen, the average person doesn't care about fuel economy or gas prices.

Brian,

I certainly agree about the gas price topic. I've adjusted my driving style (to an extent). The biggest change is that when I set my cruise on the highway, I never go above 70mph (speed limit 65). It amazes me when people fly right past me. I'm sure it's the same people that are constantly griping about gas prices.

Actually, just today there was a new STS on the highway that had to have been going over 100 mph (no ****!) and there was a bike following right behind him going the same speed.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not happy with gas prices either. I mean, there's a reason why Exxon-Mobil has recorded record profits over the last few quarts (along with a few other oil companies). I have just realized though that there's not a lot that we can do about it so we might as well adjust to it.

I've owned a lot of GM/Fords in my life as has my family.
I would like nothing more than to lust after another one.
The new Camaro is promising, from what I've seen.
The Sky is a knockout - my neighbor bought one.

Lots filled with H3/H3s and other jumbo SUVs is bad timing, but again, THEY set the focus on that market with apparently not a thought as to what might happen with gas prices - short-sighted as we're in a war and all in the Middle East...

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention to mention the Camaro. I can't believe I forgot that one. If they produce it, and they don't let the bean counters get a hold of it before they bring it out, it should be one **** of a car.

The SUV's were definitely bad timing. Although, when they started working on them I'm sure gas prices were as big of an issue as they are today.

I'm happy to see them doing the E85 thing as that will help in many different ways. Plus, they are bringing out a hybrid version of the SUV's for 2008. I just wish they could bring the E85 to the Ecotec engines. They just anounced E85 capabilities for the 3.9L I believe. Although, it's only supposed to be in the fleet mini-vans. That seems like a stupid move. If you can bring them out on your live or die SUV's, you should be able to bring them out to everybody on the V6's, not just fleet vehicles.

If they can get their two-mode hybrid system and E85 capability on the Ecotec engines, I think they'd sell a lot of vehicles. Plus, I think that will help change the perception that GM isn't a GREEN company.

They just announced the details of the Saturn Vue Greenline. It's looking like a great system. MPG of 27/32 is awesome in my opinion. That's what my Mazda3 is rated for on the highway and it's half the size of the Vue.

Anyway, glad we're on the same page Scott.

It amazes me even more when there's a red light up ahead and it's pretty obvious (to me, anyway..) that it's not going to turn green for a while since it hasn't even gotten to the left-turn phase yet.

There is a concept Saab 93 with a 2.0L Turbocharged Ecotec designed to run off of E85.

I think, with E85, turbocharging is where it's at since an engine needs a higher compression ratio to really take advantage of it. And with turbocharging, all you need to do to increase the compression ratio is up the boost.

I think GM will be glad they kept Saab instead of selling it off as was suggested by one of their directors whose name I cannot recall right now.

OK, this thread has become too civil...someone take a jab to get us back on track

Little details like no iPod integration

I'm starting to wonder why nobody has emulated the iPod interface. It is fully documented, and it could be used to interface more than just iPods to car stereos. It could be used for Sirius and XM tuners, and other mp3 players or even CD changers. I suppose the interface could be patented, but it is more or less a CD changer protocol that supports title and artist information (CD text) and that has existed since 1997 at least (iPod came out in 2001) so there is prior art.

Funny.
Apple is actually being sued by Creative because THEY think they invented the interface.
Apple will defend that one to the end...

We're talking about the same interface, right? Not the user interface, but the protocol used on the cable that connects the iPod to the car stereo?

I had heard about a dispute related to the user interface, but nothing about the actual protocol used to control the iPod.

Oh, sorry, too much of a GUI guy. Thought you meant the iPod GUI.

Yeah, others should use that. Even Apple has essentially moved to all USB 2 for that one.

I love what they've done in the SCION, but there's lots of room for improvements too.

What have they done in the SCION Scott? I'm not familiar with the audio systems in them.

The SCION has an iPod option with the Pioneer HU.
It's a double-DIN setup with a true iPod audio port as well as an AUX jack and power inside of the center console.
It's wonderful - it integrates with the iPod/HU/steering wheel controls.
Now, the HU isn't as inclusive (fancy, but some of it is useless) as some of the after-market stereos, but most of the iPod's interface is controlled in the Pioneer.
Where it gets somewhat painful is in the scrolling if you have a huge iPod/library. The speed at which you can scroll does not "accelerate" like it does on the iPod, hence you best setup lots of playlists - which I do.

Incredible value. It also has XM/Sirius capability - but that was an option i didn't get at the time.

I'm pretty sure that there will be either an aftermarket or GM factory iPod interface before long. There are already aftermarket iPod interfaces that make the iPod emulate a CD changer for 2005 and older GM vehicles, and which display title/artist information because GM wisely included CD text capability in their changer protocol.

This is how most aftermarket stereos are handling iPod integration--it emulates a CD changer.

I've been thinking about getting a Scion Pioneer headunit and putting it in my Mustang which has a double-DIN opening. They're pretty cheap on Ebay (about $75), but I think they might be wider than a true DIN unit. I haven't measured one. EDIT: I just found an Ebay auction with a photo of the backside and it looks like the faceplate overhangs the actual chassis by about 1/2". Looks like I could modify it to fit...

Indeed, just as people did for Cabbage Patch Kids at one time and look at them now. I have no doubt that, that canker-blossom being confused for a car (scion) will, in due course, go the same way.

Wow. Another brain-surgeon on the boards!
Let me guess, you drive a Yukon?
Sounds like someone thought he'd retire on Cabbage-Patch dolls and lost.

A friends wife has the fully loaded turbocharged version, it's a kick.

I wanted a Turbo PT (Dream Cruiser) but my wife got tired of them and wasn't on-board.
Very nice vehicle, but I don't like the changes to the interior this year.
They have a new "Route 66" version in yellow, which is kinda cool.
