Gigafactory Texas expansion

Tesla's are a status symbol and a fad. In the Washington DC area it was always MB and BMW. Every 3rd car you saw was one of those. Now it's Tesla. Tesla is required to keep up with the neighbors. Tesla was first to market and established the market. My point is, how are people going to view a Ford or GM EV that is expensive. These two companies have always built vehicles for the masses. Tesla's are a unique and expensive fad. People will spend $$$ for a Tesla right now. Will they be willing to spend that same $$$ on a Ford or Chevy EV? I say No. Their sales will not come close to competing with Tesla.

The Chevy and Ford EVs aside from the Bolt are more expensive than the Tesla. By a lot.

The EV business is still in its infancy. Costs will likely continue to come down. Right now, Tesla is beating up on everyone with the EV price cut wars. Ford and everyone else is losing billions.

Where will we be in 5 or 10 years? Who the heck knows but I am holding on to my Tesla stock, that much I can tell you.

Perhaps it may not fit some person's narrative, but Tom Zhu may be a citizen of New Zealand.
From CNN:
He was born in China and CNN was not able to confirm if he still holds Chinese citizenship. According to his social media profile, he acquired a bachelor's degree from the Auckland University of Technology in 2004 and an MBA degree from The Fuqua School of Business at Duke University.

Tesla, like all major car companies, is a multinational company.
The cars they sell in America are the most "Made in America" of any brand.
China does not officially recognize dual citizenship. Once you get a foreign citizenship you lose your Chinese one right away.

Do you want him to hire someone with Indian background instead? Like Microsoft and Google?

Or do you want him to hire someone from Ford, GM, etc and run Tesla to the ground?
What are you some sort of race hustler? This is about hiring chicoms not race.
BTW I do not mind Indians, Apache, Cherokee, Sioux, etc were all noble people. LOL

I am not sure what citizenship Mr Zhu holds. Of course some posters have everything figured out, even though they don't know anything about him either.

Ah, yes. The proverbial sour grapes.

I on the other hand hope Tesla improves. I may consider one for my next EV if they can match my Kia or exceed it at a +-15k price point.
Sour grapes? You must have mistaken me for someone who actually cares. If I sold a few cars off so my wife doesn't go crazy I could buy a tesla tomorrow but I don't want one now or ever.
Sour grapes would be someone who wants one but cant have one and is po'd at anybody who does.

You just skipped wanting one but somehow managed to get bothered by others spending their own money, whether it was buying a car or Musk expanding a company. I don’t know if it’s just me but all of this stuff reads so weird. I don’t understand the motivation and how you got to believe all the nonsense of the scenario you’ve constructed in your head. What’s with the Chicom crap? Are we just obsessed with the idea of communists and painting any business person who is from China as a communist?

If you don't care, why are you so hurt over a car? And throw around derogatory language about people you don't even know?

Simple because they are doing everything possible to force people into buying these things and not leave them as just an alternative for those who want one. Derogatory language? Not really.

You do realize in the not to distant future we are going to war with these people and it is not going to be nice,
They want to buy or steal every trade and military secret they can get to use against us. As a Chinese working as a executive for Tesla in China this guy did not just walk away from the CCP.

I found a claim in the South China Morning Post (the biggest newspaper in Hong Kong) that he holds a New Zealand passport. This is the best I can do since older articles are available with subscription. When I saw it I could see parts of the article before the subscription overlay covered up the relevant sections.

Born in China and also reportedly holding a New Zealand passport, Zhu joined Tesla in early 2014 to help build out its Supercharger network. Before that, he helped found an international engineering consultancy that offered services to Chinese contractors wanting to expand overseas. He holds a bachelor’s degree of commerce in information technology from New Zealand’s AUT and later graduated from the MBA programme at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business.

It's kind of hard to find video of him, but from what I've seen he's definitely someone who grew up in China and not someone who went to an English speaking country at a young age. However, his English is impeccable. I know some people who have been in the US for decades and their English isn't anywhere near as good.

But as Panda said, China doesn't recognize dual citizenship. If he accepted any other foreign nationality, China would consider that to be renunciation of his Chinese citizenship.

There have been some less than polite labels being tossed around, but throwing out a KKK reference is certainly a significant step-up from that.
I find it odd, even sad, that derogatory language is allowed here. Right or wrong, the response reference would never have been made.
How would you feel if you were of Chinese ancestry? You might even feel there is not that much difference between the two references.

And the bottom line is, Tesla is a great American company that happens to hire people from many walks of life. Mr. Zhu is certainly an accomplished executive or he would not have the job.

Trav's German, probably wouldn't care if somebody referred to him as a Kraut, however, I agree that the label he's using isn't in the best taste. But, as I noted, making a KKK reference is a pretty big jump from that.

Agree that Tesla is a great American car company, even if I'm not a fan of their interiors ;)
