GSV,

Oh the pain...the pain...

For those members who are new to the board........Pscholte is a well-liked member and goodhearted jester, who revels in the "green elixer of life". If you search his posts, you will find that his devotion to GC is more jest, than anything else. (although I am still waiting for his results of GC as a hair tonic

).

Much of what is posted on this site is opinion, as opinion is hard to separate from, since concrete evidence is not always available to us. There are logical and illogical reasons to dislike any oil...............and that is OK. Let's just make sure that the animosity doesn't get displaced to our members.

After all, We have to stick together........we spend many, many hours reading about the fine points of automotive lubrication, and obsessively debating over UOA's with differences of a few PPM's in wear metals!!!

They could take us all to the funny farm any day now.

I've already considered this...my plan if they come for me is to release a big synthetic oil slick to divert their attention while I slip away. Like a squid...

Well, here's an apples to oranges comparison that means absolutely nothing. I changed the oil on a friends Toyota Corolla 1.8L I4 some time ago and put in GC with an STP filter. It now has over 7500 miles on the oil change and the oil looks like honey. The prior oil was dino and had been in there for 8000 miles and was BLACK!

Compare that to the Amsoil ATM in my Chevy S10 4.3L V6. The Amsoil at 7500 miles was much darker. In addition to different engines, my truck has 111K miles on the odometer, her car has 88K. She also drives more highway miles, so her car reached the 7500 miles quicker. I'm also using a Supertech filter.

And all we're comparing here is color, no UOA has been done. I am thinking about trying GC with my next oil change just to see how it does in the truck.

Like I said, apples to oranges... er...figs comparison....

sbc....,

Thanks for the kind words. I genuinely do like SLX and I REALLY do have 154 qts, but as you said much of what I write about it is firmly tongue-in-cheek. It is intended to amuse, not anger or annoy and maybe even to cause people to climb on board the SLX Siegeszug (bandwagon). Whatever people use I hope they get 350K out of their motors.

simpleguy_68,

I prefer to think of it as a Gümmi Bears to Jelly Beans comparison, but, bottom line, I'm glad you're thinking about trying it. I wish you great success if you do!

PS sbc...I don't want to use it as hair tonic since I must have plenty to use as salad dressing!

GC availability should absolutely be no problem anywhere in the US where there's a Autozone. just have the Autozone manager order it from their Castrol rep and Voila...there you go.

I am so far happy with my GC in the Suburban. just moved from Iowa to North Carolina and we pulled a 3500 lbs. trailer about 1200 miles going South through the hills of VA and WV.... so the engine and tranny had to work a little. On top of that, the ambient temps were around 88F so I am sure the oil got hot. The oil pressure retention even at those high temps was excellent!! On dino or M1 the oil pressure would be 5 lbs. lower at similar temps than with GC. The oil turned relatively dark after already 1000 miles, but I assume it was because of the pulling.

Will be interesting to see the UOA ... I will drop this oil at 3000 miles.

I'm sure Castrol is a fine maker of oil but their marketing stinks. Not the catchey frazes, the product availability. No GC in FL anywhere I know of and if it's as good as the hype they should have it on a special rack like RL. No they hide it in a look alike bottle and why it may be their # 1 or 2 seller if they had any sence.

Alex: Be careful, it's not that easy. The geniuses at AZ and Castrol have really created an odd situation. Castrol has 0w-30 that's US made, but comes in almost the same bottle as the German Castrol. Autozone compounds the problem by stocking the stuff interchangeably -- you must examine each bottle individually to make sure it says "Made in Germany". I've checked out about a dozen AZ stores between New Orleans (where I work) and Pensacola (where I live) and every one that had GC also had some US made 0w-30 bottles mixed in. Buyer beware. . .

FYI, if you make it up to the Panhandle area, we've got GC all over the place. I've found it in a couple AZ stores in Pensacola, I've heard it's available in Fort Walton too, further east, I don't know. Moving west, there's plenty in New Orleans as well.

Castrol is indeed a mystery sometimes and their distribution scheme for SLX baffles me, but I am not convinced that what we see from them is as dark as some of our members believe. I know about the issue over Group III and the term synthetic, but even that is not necessarily underhanded depending on how Castrol viewed the situation. I also realize their tech service is uninspiring but I'm not sure this is not due as much to ineffective internal communications in a multinational operation as to deliberate attempts to disguise, mislead or deceive. Bottom line for me is they make a product I like and so I will continue to buy it. I don't blame those who are baffled or put off by the way they do business; I do wish we could get out of the blame game with them though...it doesn't change anythng.
