for a 3.4L V6 Tacoma at 45k miles.

I'm not a fan of Pennzoil or Mobil 1, and I don't know if I can readily trust the other viscosities of Castrol Synthetic; as I've heard Castrol changes quality all the time??

I was using the GC to aim for 7-8k, OCI's on a truck used heavily for construction work.

Any pointers on where I turn to now and is there a problem with using Valvoline Maxlife in a 50k mile engine??

I'm in the same boat. I just switched over to GC in my G35 and like it so far. I still have 27 quarts, so that should give me some time to find something else.
ML will work great in your truck. Make sure you use a filter that flows well and you'll be happy.

No there is no problem with using MaxLife in an engine with less than 75k, my mom's car has 51k and I emailed Valvoline about using it in her car (3.1L V6), and here's what they said:
(My email:) Hello there! I recently purchased some 10W30 Valvoline MaxLife Synthetic Blend (for engines over 75k) and I was originally going to use it for my car (1995 Acura Integra) but I wanted to know if it would be okay to put in a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu with around 51,000 miles on the odometer. It says for over 75,000 so that's why I wanted to make sure that it doesn't hurt anything

thanks a lot!

Their response: Yes you can use it for your GM application.

GC hasn't been discontinued, it's just now getting harder to come by

I wouldn't be scared to use any other synthetic, unless some shocking #s came back from a UOA

What about a nice thick 10w30 with exceptional cold flow characteristics, like TropArtic 10w30 or Walmart Supertech High Mileage 10w30?

I don't think GC has been discontinued--it's readily available here in Canada. Still, if you can't find it in the US then it may as well be discontinued.

I don't know what viscosity is recommended for your truck, but if and when I can't get GC, I'm going to switch to Mobil 1 0W-40. It meets BMW LL-01 (longlife) spec which is a tough spec and not a lot of oils are LL-01 approved (GC is, which is the main reason I use it).

It looks like I'll be going back to M1 for their 0w40 oil too....at least the cold pour point and flash point look like it's mostly a PAO based oil.

Dam n!!! I wish somebody else would start carrying GC!

Auto Zone still carries GC, if you like paying $6 a quart.

It was worth it, being a pure synthetic I didn't mind the cost, considering even your regular oils are averaging $3-4/qt around here anyways, and most of your group III oils, i.e PP, etc are averaging $5-6/qt

Visited 3 different autozone's - couldn't find any.

Castrol Syntec 5w30 looked tempting, but they (autozone) wanted more ($6.20/qt) then what I'd been paying for the GC.

I'm not sure if the syntec 5w30 american formula is a pure synthetic or Group III, I'm pretty sure I read that it was a group III - in which, it makes the cost aggravating to see/pay.

When I can get Rotella synthetic 5w-40, which is a group III for around $4/qt or $17/gallon. Only it's too thick for this particular engine - maybe, book calls for only 5w30/10w-30 if the latter can't be found.

Looking into Bill In Utah's posts primarily, regarding Castrol GTX - I may just resort to this oil, it's at least $3 cheaper per quart then any group III around here, and can probably average a mere 5k oci with good results.

Still contemplating.

Any over the counter 30 weight synthetic will be more than adequate for that Toyota. Not sure what you have against PP or M1 but you could always run Valvoline, Castrol or Supertech for that matter. Those are excellent V6s that would most likely run 250K on cheap dino, I wouldn't over think this (I know, its what we do here.)

PP on sale at AA this month is good deal as is the $19 price for a 5 quart jug at Wally World.

I know alot of GC users want a Group IV. I would think that many want to stay with Group IV - so many will return to Mobil-1. I'm assuming that Mobil still has a good chunk of Group IV in 5w30. All others??? ..I dunno - but I do recommend Quaker State and Pennzoil. Good Oil With Good Chinamart/Advanced Auto Pricing!

Want to pay steeper oil prices?... then Schafers & Amsoil are hard to beat when looking for top-notch quality.

I think syntec is more of a cocktail than a straight grp III.
