My old post from other forums:
------------------
My 2001 A4 is driving me crazy. It’s only about 60 000 miles (90k kms), I bought the car 5 months ago and here is the history:

1. As soon as I bought the car, I changed oil (Castrol Syntec 5W40, Group 3 synthetic) and drove about 3k miles, tapping noise was there whether cold or hot engine, a little bit better when hot

2. Then I did Pro-Line (Liqui-Moly) Engine Flush and switched to Liqui-Moly 5W40 full synthetic (Group 4 or 5, not sure) and drove 3k miles again, I noticed that as I was approaching 3k miles since last OCI, the tapping noise was almost disappearing when the engine was hot, but it was still present

3. Then I made a stupid decision, because Liqui-Moly oil can take another 3K (6k total) before having to change it, but I ran
seafom for 20 min (idling), drained the oil and put 1qt of Rislone + 3qt of Castrol Syntec 5W40 again because Rislone apparently cannot be used with full synthetics.

Oh man, the noise has never been higher, like I have water instead of oil. I have driven 200 miles so far with this combination and it’s really bad. I was hoping that 200 miles should be enough for Rislone to start working, but nothing.

In my desperation to do something, I bought Castrol Syntec European 0W30 (Group 4) and getting ready to dump the 200 miles old oil/Rislone, but what a waste.
---------------------------

Now, all I can say, I drained the Syntec/Rislone after about 500 km, put in GC 0W30 and:
- first 100 km was similar, clatter all the time, hot and cold
- at about 200-250 km, and good 1/2 hour drive (city), ticking is disappearing, it still thicks when cold though.

Will report back in 500 km.

had tick with oil. Had other noises when you added a bunch of stuff. Back to square one when you got rid of all the stuff and put what's supposed to be in the sump in the sump. I'd stick with trying diff oils instead of pouring tons of add's in your sump.

Just my .02

Try a good dino oil and see if the tick goes away. Syntec made my 3000GT sound like it was running with no oil in it. It ticked BAD until complete warmup, for a couple of minutes. Replaced it with Valvoline dino,no more tick ever, whether hot or cold.

Yeah, 5w-30 syntec is thin, probaby has little vii and doesnt wrap the cam well on startup - a typ synthetic fuel economy (severe) compromise. I was going to dump it, but just dumped a pint and added a pint back of 10w-40 syntec and ALL noise issues subsided. The Magic Vii and longer molecules to the rescue. Now you see the prob with overprocessed grp iii base oil. Same complaints with M1. Not enough molecular diversity. That 10w40 syntec is gooey - I wouldnt run a full sump of it in anything that wasnt falling apart. I didnt get good power off the synpower, may have been a weight issue - but oil felt odd, motor never ran right. I fixed that sump to be serviceable with a little light ester addition, 8oz.

Ticking has been slowly subsiding; if I extrapolate this, I hope it will be gone in the next 500-1000 miles. GC oW30 is almost 0W40 oil, group 4.
What I experienced by switching from LM 5W40 to Syntec 5W40 was that ticking got worse.

My plan is to add MMO some time like 1000 miles before oil change, if it doesn't go away totally.

I`d never ever use any additive in my engine if I were you. Just stick with motor oil. Try a 10W40 weight dino (like Valvoline white bottle) and I bet you`ll be pleasantly suprised.

A quart of this stuff added to your engine and all your troubles will be gone.
