Hey everyone, I recently acquired a 1997 4Runner with the 5VZ-FE V6. The car's had a mixed past with maintenance so I am trying to get it all caught up.

For the coolant, there is currently some questionable orange coolant in there. I plan on changing the water pump (+ timing belt), radiator and thermostat so I will have the system open already. I will also be flushing the system thoroughly with distilled water.

I currently have a ton of sealed G05 left over from my other two cars and have been researching if it's safe to run in this 4Runner.

The recommendation is typically Toyota Red, which from research is HOAT without silicates.

G05 is also HOAT, but has a low amount of silicates.

I reached out to Valvoline directly via their website and got the following response.

I was looking into the differences between G05 and Asian Red coolant for my 1997 Toyota 4Runner with the 3.4L engine. I looked on the product finder and I see both listed as compatible.

(Their response)
While both H-OAT based coolants, they do have different formulations. The Zerex Asian coolant contains no silicates, borates, 2-EHA, amines or nitrites, but does utilize phosphates and is the equivalent to the Asian auto manufacturer coolants used such as Toyota, Lexus and Scion. The Zerex G-05 is a low-silicate, reduced pH, phosphate-free formula, that contains nitrites. It is formulated for domestic and European vehicles primarily.

If the cooling system is thoroughly flushed, G-05 may be used. If you were topping off or performing a drain and re-fill the Zerex Asian is best recommended.

Given this information, would I be safe to run G-05? Or am I better off running Toyota Red? If the answer is to run Asian Red I'm good with that, I just overbought the G05 thinking I'd need more, so I have something like 7 gallons extra.

I only use OEM coolant, in this case, like my 98 Tacoma 3.4, Toyota Red. 296k and a clean coolant tank and system. 30k changes.

Yeah you're probably right, I just need to find something to do with all this G05..

I'm planning on getting Valvoline Restore and Protect from Walmart anyways, so I'll get some Asian Red at the same time.

The coloration in there is suspect. Do you know where the block drain is?

I’d flush through the radiator and the block, then swap to either Toyota red or g-05. My brother has run red in his 96 Land Cruiser/LX450 and it has been great.
