Funny thing happened car shopping.

The Ole CRV is getting long in the tooth so I have been assisting my wife in looking for a new car. She is extremely varied in her desires, but the most important thing is how the car feels (mostly the seat/ seat position) and looks. I figure we would be buying in a year. We test drove more cars than I care to list, mostly in the 25-30,000 range. Next thing I know, she is sitting in a Nissan Cube with a huge grin on her face. She drove it like she stole it (which I kinda encourage on test drives, but she hesitates). Being a leftover 2012 and that I keep my car long enough that resale value doesn't matter much, we made a deal. $15,700 plus tax and tags. I thought of complaining, but then looked at what we were planning to spend and actually feel better. Personally, I maybe one of the few people who love how it looks and love the interior room. Plus, most people on fuelly.com are getting 30mpg in mixed driving. Didn't see it coming, but glad I don't have to sit in any more cars.

They look pretty practical. I do like the simple Versa-esque interior.

The asymmetrical styling does take some getting used to. The rear bumper reminds me more of Renault than Nissan, when I first saw them I thought it was a rebadged Renault because of the styling. But I can see the appeal in a car like that. I still have a soft spot for the old xB 1.5 and my wife has expressed interest in the similar Kia Soul (which looks bigger than her PT when parked next to each other)

We (only?!) paid 21K for our forester out the door and it has worked out very well and that car too gets over 30 combined with a 5m stick. Tons of rear seat room in those now.

Yep, it has the CVT. Honestly, I love it. Cruising through town it will accelerate the car while keeping the engine below 1500 rpms. This box cruises on the highway at 60mph at around 2000 rpms. It took my wife a couple times getting used to the CVT. She kept expecting the engine to rev more and would stick her foot down further to compensate. Now she gets it though and it accelerates really smoothly and quietly. I think CVTs are awesome for small engines. The only issue is wind noise on the highway (which we heard when we bought it). However, the wind noise is way less than the engine noise that my CRV generously supplied for 13 years. Currently, the computer says we are averaging 31.5mpgs this tank in mixed driving. We definitely have gotten lots of looks and questions like "What car is that."

Not the biggest fan of those in terms of styling, but I can appreciate the interior space advantage they have. And you did save money, and the waifu is happy.
