I work 45 hours a week in a non-air conditioned shop that has very little cross ventilation due to the way the building is designed. Whatever the conditions outside, that's the conditions inside MINUS any breeze that may be present. I can barely keep my head up at the end of some of these days (I usually bill 10-15 hours on an average 9 hour day, we've been BUSY). I'm 29 and in great shape, stay hydrated, and rest in the lobby when I can to cool down, but it doesn't really matter much at the end of the day.

This has lead to lots of displeasure from the misses, due to my lack of "stamina", among other things, directly related to my being in the heat day in and day out.

It also causes me to neglect household duties somewhat, mainly yard work. I just can't find the energy to spend MORE time in the heat than I already do.

I'll end my rant, let's hear from the others who are working out in this nonsense! And pray for a break!

. I wonder how many people worked in the blazing sun in triple digit heat and high humidity today, then went home and took care of business? And will do the same tomorrow. When I was your age..................

Blaa blaa blaa backin my day uphill both ways. It isn’t a generational thing. It has been miserably hot here for the last three months. We went straight from snow to summer with no time to acclimate. Usually we have a week of hot with a break inbetween but it has been non stop. It isn’t even cooling off enough to kill the humidity at night.

Im 49! I work in a shop with no cooling either. Every car i work on is 200 degrees or more.Summer temps can hit 115f. Normal is 105-108f. This week its been 102f and a 10 minute rain every afternoon. So 100+ and humidity. I work 7a-5p m-f.

Hottest I have seen in the shop was 122f.

I hate cold too. I consider anything under 80f coat weather.

It's miserable, I can't stand the heat. Was 115 last week. Not it's cooled off to about 100 but we've been getting a tiny bit of "rain" and it's been humid too.

I went over to visit my grandpa today and left my car running with the a/c on for over 1/2 an hour so it stayed nice and cool.

Worked on roof top ac units in st. louis for over 40 years and use to do a heat dance every day looking for more heat. Use to get by with a water hose running and soaking my shirt and my head. Heat made me crazy i know.

Here that car would either be ticketed by the cops or stolen.

I'm calling Bravo Sierra on that one!

They may have been ISSUED coats but that doesn't mean they needed them due to cold, in Fla., in Sept.

Summers have always been hot & humid in the lower sub-tropics.

Yeah, I know what you mean. When I got to work today, it was overcast and only about 90, so I parked my car in the normal lot, not under any shade.. came out about 1PM to get some lunch and the sun had been out for a couple hours. I think it was about 125 inside the car. On the bad days, if I make this mistake, the car gets up over 150 inside.. talk about an unpleasant drive home.

I don't make this mistake much any more.

I am the same way. The shop I am in now has the worst air flow of any shop I have been in. My toolbox hits 100° fairly often inside the shop. I had to start weighing myself a couple times a day to make sure I am drinking enough, I was getting dehydrated my first couple summers here. That was mostly because the water tasted awful due to the new plumbing and the energy star water fountain sucks.

Yeah, and worse out in Blythe or Brawley ... We got hot spots all over and temps are on the rise. Weather is reacting to more energy in the system. Don't know where it'll go, but I doubt an Ice Age

I think about Pop who made his living up on a D-8 pushing dirt all day, every day. He thought it was good when they got umbrellas so they could get in the shade on some pushes... He passed last year at 98 and change. Never complained, but I saw him come draggin in many times. That was one tough old boy!

Hate to say it, but its nothing new. I worked in a Greenhouse here for 5 summers, and on the hot days it was over 110 inside with humidity a given... We'll complain about our hot days and then forget about the nice days that were in between. We've had 11 days at 90 degrees or over (and it was 100 on Memorial day). We typically average 15 days above 90 in the cities, so ahead of schedule, yes, abnormal, no. Overall a few degrees warmer than average. Yes, there was no ramp from winter to spring, it just went right to summer.

Don't like it, find a job that doesn't require working in the elements. I hate the heat, and sweat like crazy. Sucked it up and did my job because well, that was my job. Now I work a job that I work in the elements at times. Still have the same attitude. Suck it up and make it happen. And yes, on the hot days that means I'm dragging in the evening.

Take care of yourself and stay safe in the heat...

Preach! My shop is mildly insulated with one bay door (no option to circulate air very well) and as of yet I have one 8K BTU portable air conditioner that I leave on overnight when it's warm enough that every degree counts. But even so, when the heat index is 100+ and the afternoon sun comes around to hit the face of the building, I'm done. I've resigned myself to knocking off through the late afternoon and going back in for a few hours in the evening when necessary. It ain't just you.

At least you're out of the sun...

We've been in and out of the 90s with high humidity, and by 9am your soaked

Hydration and the rare dive into a air conditioned establishment is the only way to survive

You'd think basements or manholes would be cooler... They are not

It's not like we've never had heat waves before. I can't help but wonder how much of this is because the bulk of the population is far more out of shape and too heavy today, than they were 50 years ago? If you look at the stats, the United States has turned into a diabetes factory. It's at epidemic levels. You can't turn on the TV without seeing a commercial featuring some drug company pedaling a drug to control it. Most of it has been caused by bad diet, obesity, and a lack of proper exercise.

People are eating garbage 3 meals a day, don't exercise enough, then complain when it gets hot. Because they're carrying around 50 extra pounds. Slim kids playing Little League and riding their bicycles after school, have been replaced by big fat slobs sitting around playing X-Box 360, and yelling, "Get the door, it's Domino's!"

I have 2 neighbors that retired about the same time I did, (3-1/2 years ago). Both of them have put on at least 30 pounds in that time. They were both out working in their yards, sweating like 2 thoroughbreds that just finished 6 furlongs, when I walked by getting my mail yesterday. Both said the same thing to me.... "Man is it HOT!". (It was morning, humid, and in the upper 80's). They've been my neighbors for 20 years, and I never once ever heard them complain about the heat before they strapped the feed bag on. It's Summer in the desert for God's sake. What do they expect, Parka's and mittens?

I love this heat! We've had more days in the 90s so far this year than we had during the entire summer last year! My wife and I bought swim passes for the outdoor pools in Oakville and have been using them almost every day so far. It's nice to get out of the pool at 8pm and it's still 90 degrees out and you're not freezing cold. It's also nice to walk the dog at 11 pm and it's still in the 80s. I love when it still feels hot after dark, it feels like I'm on a tropical vacation

Plenty of hydration. You can add from time to time sweeten+some lemon juice HOT tea (arabic treat). You may be surprised...

Also, buy a big fan with a metal cage. HF should have them.

For the missus, well, go get a cool shower first thing when you get home.

Have ready at home some home-made gatorade. Plenty of recipes on a search.
Consume enough of what your body is telling you. You are still catching up with work water loss.

Then in the evening you may be more "prepared".....

Nobody said on their grave "I wish I work in the heat more". But a lot of people had think "I wish I had more ......."

I'd much rather sweat through cutting grass on a hot, humid day than freeze just taking the garbage out on a cold winter afternoon.
