they should look at the facts and make up their own minds.

Just don't use some POJ $2 filter with non-metal end caps. wink

Got any facts to suggest a reason why not?

Just read the boards and you'd know why. Use whatever you want ... I'll stick with metal end capped filters.

Who the heck gives an oil filter for a Christmas present anyway? I love my filters, but that's a pretty lame gift if you ask me.

Good stocking stuffer for the car nut.

With all the millions of Fram filters Wal-Mart alone sells its a miracle there is any cars left on the roadways.

BTW I usually do not use Fram filters.

Nothing lame about it. I try and make every gift somewhat personal regardless of cost. I saw funky 80's type/style sunglasses that my daughter has a yen for. That's what she got for Christmas. $35 and the biggest smile could be had.

The main thing is that it will be used and appreciated.

I gave my girlfriend's dad 5 quarts of oil, a Motorcraft FL-400S and a quart of brake fluid, he was thrilled. I would be if I got oil & filters for Christmas too!

If you knew the specified efficiency rating of the FL-820S, you might change your mind. An efficiency of 80% @ 20 microns is nothing to get too excited over IMO. There are many other good filters out there that will do much better than that.
You know I'm aware of the rating, but the FL-820S is the standard choice on my son's 05 Explorer. The OLM on the Explorer is consistent @ ~5k.

I/we changed his oil and filter over the holidays and changed out his filter 820S with another 820S. I cut it open today to check it out. The FL 820S is a very solidly built filter all the way around. The efficiency rating that Ford/MC states baffles me a bit because to look at it's construction one wouldn't think it's accurate. That said, no matter the rating, with regular 5k OCI's using the 820S, I expect his engine will go a long way. And, for ~$3.70 at Wally it's priced right. I'll try and save it until I get a camera with which to post pics.

The Xtended Guard at more than twice the price would likely be a better choice for extended OCI's than the MC.

Yes, baffles me too. Maybe I'll try to email Ford and see if they can verify the efficiency ratings on their filters. I like Motorcraft filters, but if they really are only 80% efficient I think I'd go with something else instead.

I have disliked fram since the first time I cut open one of their basic filters. It is that reason that I do not buy any of their products. This is just a personal choice based of my own non expert opinions and not hard data or filtering science.

I would tend to agree, HyperJ, that if a companies basic low end product is built well at its price point, you tend to have more faith in the company overall. chez Purolator Classic. That said, the XG seems to be well made when taken without consideration of the marginal construction of their orange can. But why did they change it(XG) to a dual layer element so quickly? To go from the advertised 7000 mile to the 10000 mile rating? I am also scared to use high effiency filters in small form factors - I would guess that you'ld see more bypass operation which can lead to bearing streaks and clogged hydraulic tappet orifaces.

After reading all the feedback I think I am just going to stick with the Motorcraft...I only put around 2,000 miles on the car per year and change the oil every six months so I doubt the filter is catching that much between changes. I will have more piece of mind with the Motorcraft since that is what I have been using. I am sure I can exchange the Fram at one of several stores.

Hummm ... after all the feedback I'm surprised you made that decision. I'd even use the XG FRAM (only FRAM I like) ... especially if only ran it 2K ~ 3K miles.

I just don't have much confidence in Fram's products while I have all the confidence in the world with Motorcraft.

Couldn't tell that from that first sentence.

Over that mileage/usage, the dumping of the sump makes filter selection pretty much inconsequential one way or the other.

That's unless you see a unicorn sitting in the garage
