Fram XG7317 9,000 miles cut open

9,000 oci on a 2016 Subaru Impreza 5mt 2.0L FB20 with Mobil 1 0w40. Im no filter expert but it looks like pleat is separated/torn from glue at end on one side of the pleat. It moves easily and freely on the torn side only and is lower/sunken down compared to the rest of the pleats

M1 0w40 and another XG7317 went back in/on.

It's either torn or was glued in place out of square. Good pics but just can't really tell from my angle. So, you think it's a tear?

Edit: Looked again & it does appear like it's torn. It's in the dreaded tear zone too so adds more evidence it's probably torn. Bummer! This will be the first "New Fram" version I've seen that tore.

This filter caught me by surprise for sure. Will be opening up all of them to check as they come back future oil changes.
 
A lot of full throttle blasts?
Way wrong oil grade likely across a very cold winter through a small form factor high efficiency filter = NO and NO.

I tore in a similar fashion the expensive, larger Honda pcx-004 S2000 filter (same universal asian fitment) across winter in a 2.5L Nissan automatic. My tear was right near the endcap glue line.

Does Fram specify a specific weight of oil the filter was designed for?

Never seen that from any manufacturer. They typically say to follow the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations. Filter maker just specs the filter to the vehicle.
 
I think Fram even knows this media is pretty weak, why else would they still wire back the XG2,XG5,XG8A,XG16 and possibly other large diameter Ultras.
I didn't know that, interesting. Pleats are much deeper on those, sounds like they need extra support.
 
The new FRAM Titanium looks to have same media as the FRAM Ultra . Using the TITANIUM FS9688 and FS7317 . Hope they hold up until the fall when winter O.C.s are done . $ is the root of all greed . :(

If I was this worried I’d go the “endurance” route. Oops🙊🙊🙊🙊😱😱😱

I mean c’mon; you knew the current titanium and ultra are NO longer wire backed. I could care less too. People call me nuts for running ancient filters for over 20k in a POS Toyota. It didn’t blow up either.
