Fram Ultra XG9688 Before HPL Cleaner and Post HPL OCI 5200Miles

People are starting to use the word "wire" for both steel wire backed and plastic mesh backed.
Guess if they like the word "wire", they could clarify/qualify it by using the terms "metal wire" or "nylon wire" or "polymer wire". But in the most basic definition of the word, "wire" is taken to mean made of metal. I leaned a long time ago when dealing with technical people and SMEs, that not using the correct terminology got you strange looks like you didn't know what you're talking about or not knowing much about the subject matter.

Not common enough apparently. 😄 Wire and polymer are two different materials. Wire being more stout of course.
Call it "reinforced" media. Or call it "wire backed" when it's actually wire, or call it "polymer mesh backed" when it's actually polymer. ;)
I'll call it Nylon wire backed or nylon reinforced to discern the difference.

Vehicle is 2017 Outback 3.6 I've owned since new. 160K miles on the clock. Post FF she has had about 16 Fram Ultra XG9688 filters and Mobil 1 5-30 (with IIRC 2 Pennz Plt 5-30 runs). OCI is 7500 -10k. Until the HPL run I've never had one of these filters show anything but excellent visual results. I do cut every filter post OCI.

I've done 5 or 6 UOA's with excellent results. I ran HPL cleaner for 5200 miles. My guess was there would be little to no cleaning but the filter has me guessing.... @ZeeOSix I'm really interested in hearing your thoughts on this. Is it the filter? Or did the HPL have anything to do with it?? The filter before HPL was bought along with the filter used for the HPL run within the last 6 months from Amazon subscribe and save. The previous filter was a 7500mile OCI.

No visible debris in the HPL run but certainly dark color (not that it matters much). Pics below! The wavy one is the HPL 5200mile OCI.

Nice photos, can you wrap them in absorbent towels to see how it looks and what it caught when it dries up?

Those wavy pleats are enough to steer me away from Ultras from now on. Sticking with the Endurance once my supply of old Titanium's run out.

Wavy pleats have been seen in other Fram Ultra filters ever since they started to move away from wire backed fully synthetic media. I doubt it has anything to do with running HPL cleaner.

As long as there aren't any tears in the media, you should be fine. If the wavy media bothers you, consider the Purolator Boss since all of them have full synthetic media with a mesh backing. That media isn't going to distort or tear, and as a bonus they have a bypass valve that matches OE specs for Subaru engines. Just watch out for closed louvers or any other obvious build quality issues.

The FRAM Endurance still has wire backed media... for now. Who knows what they will look like next year.

Or just say screw it and go with mid-tier aftermarket or OEM filters. 7,500 - 10,000 miles will be just fine for these filters. OEM might not have the best efficiency, but the new Tokyo Roki filters from the dealer have excellent build quality.

Not what you actually said earlier (post 14). Is that like "jumbo shrimp"? 😄 ;)
I suppose I just didn't think it was that confusing & people would understand the difference but I could be making things worse by saying just "wire backed" like #14. I'll improve my grammar.

(y) ... ya, most who don't read this forum a lot would see the words "wire backed" and pretty much think it was actual steel wire, not some other material.

That's only 2 days from now !! 😄
That's exactly why I chose that wording.. remember that thread about 3 different designs for one part number all found on the same shelf?

I would like to know how their quality processes work with such frequent design changes. Or on second thought maybe it is best not to ask. It is usually best not to know how to sausage is made.

Or how many times they have to change tooling. Of course, maybe they are making 3 different designs in 3 different factories ... 🤷‍♂️

Fram made the nicest filter I've ever seen only for a couple months & then they decided to go back to a basic Champ. Disappointing to say the least. I've seen many different versions for part number (TG9549).

Filters aren't likely to tell you much about whether the HPL liberated debris until you wick the excess oil out of "before HPL" and "after HPL" filters so you can better see what's captured in them.

How much is the boss?
over priced for 46 micrometers for sure. if you want to spend that much, get a mobil 1. if you want the best in protection at the moment, get a fram endurance. the endurance has nothing on the OG titanium/XG but it’s the best since they’ve gone.

The Purolator Boss is $25 for the truck & I can still get a metal wire backed Fram Ultra for the Volvo XG10415 $6.62 off eBay but retails $24. I've been using the Purolator One's on the truck lately though & they're $14.
