Fram Ultra I May Not Be Using Them Anymore! Oh Boy

I was going to change my oil this evening, but when I grabbed the Pronto cartridge filter I got from Rockauto for $1.87 I noticed one corner of the box was a little crushed. Should I send it back? What do you guys think? Sorry I don't have pics.

If the box is damaged the filter could also be damaged. One could open the box and look, but then you could get a paper cut and you know how bad they hurt. I'd send it back and get a new one.

The box was pristine on the last XG2 I bought... opened it at home and BAM! Dome end was 1/4 caved in. Got a strange look when I returned it but I cared not. Opened the box on the next one on my way to the register. Smooth dome, all set!

Yeah... I open the box when i am buying a filter for that exact reason.. Filters are damaged in transit and even while on the shelves people pick them up and drop them etc. That is not the filter companies fault im pretty sure when something leaves the filter company it is usually in one piece and not visibly damaged.

And the next two after you just didn't get it. Or... After reading it again maybe you're the only one that didn't take me seriously.

Lolol, I guess I didn't step back and really read, it was pretty late into my night and I was tired. I don't buy into the fanaticism of the BITOG sickness. Sometimes it creeps up on me and I stop and think of how many hundreds of thousands of miles I've driven before I gave a second thought to these things and then I realize I'm probably going to be ok.

I actually made a post about how reading here had MADE me return that stupid XG2 filter because of a dent. That and how I never used to even consider such things.

Sometimes it's fun to poke fun and troll a little bit but I try not to really elevate anyone's butt-hurt level too much.

It's better safe than sorry to not use a dented filter. So yeah, the BITOG brain trust made you do the right thing. Next time be proactive inspect the filter you're gonna buy before going through the checkout.

walmart website is showing the xg3980 i use in 3 vehicles on sale for $7.69(down from $8.97), are they trying to dump them?

i don't know i will check tonight or tomorrow as I was going to pick a couple up...only problem is the box has a little seal on them, so i will buy and check before i leave the parking lot.

This FRAM's flagship oil filter--do not buy into the hype being created in this thread. Walmart frequently reduces costs on automotive items (for example, last month Chevron Delo 400 LE 5W-40 was $19.97 per gallon and this month it is $16.97). The phrase "analysis paralysis or paralysis by analysis" can easily apply to some of the OCD things posted on BITOG.

I've been too lazy to post pics but... of 4 XG2s I purchased, the insides all look good. No excessive burs or sharp holes. I am still on the fence about Fram filters, but that's just from all the horror stores from years ago. I picked up 4 of them for like $4 each, figuring if I only use them for around 6,000 miles, they should hold up just fine (and could probably go double that, but meh).

It is my thoroughly non-professional opinion that the BITOG disease is, in some cases, obsessive-compulsive disorder or one of its relatives among the other anxiety disorders.

The desire to exhaustively research and analyse all components put into a valued object (a car or truck), even to the point of careful inspection of minute particulars far beyond what is done by an average person, may be a manifestation of non-stereotypical compulsive behaviour intended to alleviate general or specific anxiety that results from said disordered thinking.

I don't mean that as an insult; the line between a geeky hobby and a compulsion would depend on whether it is maladaptive. (And I am speaking from personal experience.)

I agree. When you look at all the oil changes done by franchise oil changers, independents mechanics, Walmarts, Sears, etc.,etc., and in almost all cases the cheapest filter is used without any obvious ill effects, it seems to be what you mentioned above to look at holes or other characteristics of an oil filters and then come on BITOG and write how it's the end of the world because in your humble opinion your not looking at "good holes".

People have all kinds of interests, it always seems strange to people not as interested in the subject. Sports people can be way over the top, and do people call it a disorder? I have relatives who can't even sit down at a meal with the family if any kind of game is on.

I looked again at my Toyota and Wix made filters, the inside holes are much better than the Fram, just like the OP observed. I thought I remembered larger burs, but they are not bad at all.

LoL ... guess that means all engineering type people have that "disorder" to some degree. But then there are those who don't really have an engineering type background with an aptitude to actually make sound decisions (like what oil filter to use) based on engineering principles and facts, so those are probably the ones who actually have the "disorder".

The FPS lacks the Ultra's textured grip at the end, but other than that no difference at all.
