You guys really have high expectations for a made-in-USA manufactured assembly that is available off the shelf at Wal-Mart for $8. Oil filters don't cost much more in 2016 than they did in 1996. If that means I need to live with a few sharp edges on my center tube holes, I am OK with that.
 
I do see the OP's point and agree with it, burs are not the best thing. But the only consumer choice not to have louvers or any metal burs on round holes is the Champ e-core. If one is lucky enough to find an e-core for their application.
But then again Champ is in bankruptcy and not with Fram anymore, so who knows if the quality is maintained.
What a situation.

I've had it with poorly constructed, leaky aftermarket filters after struggling for 10-15 years with problem after problem. Settled now on the replacement Nissan made by GOHNER in Mexica (slightly larger piece for the titan V8) which is good for most Nissan, Subaru, Honda and ??

What's the OP's application?

The Honda S2000 FILTEC is also stellar - same applications.
 
I use whatever filters are on closeout from Rock Auto. I haven't paid more than $1.50 for a filter in 2-3 years. Most are old Frams in torn boxes or lately got a batch of 17 Pennzoil filters for $20 for my Toyota canisters. No problems yet.

The problems you see today are universal component failures that go across a whole model line. Like weak piston rings or VVT gears or bad water pumps or head gaskets or bad sensors. None of these are even remotely oil related and manufacturers are stretching OCIs to 10k with 0w oils. when was the last time you saw anyone with an oil related failure?

If you run 0w oil and any filter for 5000 miles you can pretty much be assured your engine will go way past 250k.
 
I am using M1 0w-30 in one car and will keep it that way. I figure if Mobil says it can be used in place of 5w-30 that's good enough for me. It's the 30 that is working 99% of the time and the 0w makes the oil run faster when cold.
Seriously the OP does have a valid point, the burs are obvious. But what part of a bur is likely to be released into the oil? The tips and fine edges not visible to eye. I have yet to see a metal center tube with zero burs. Louvers have a lot of fine rough edges. So what can a person do? Nothing. Also the Fram adbv system is pretty rough too IMO, but I guess it works.
 
BITOG thinking of new things to worry about every day. Maybe he can get with Motorking and FRAM can start to hand file the burrs off of every hole before the filters are assembled. (sarcasm). Here is one to make crazyoildude's head explode. Maybe louvers really are better. There is no chance of a hanging chad coming loose and getting into the engine.

Not sealed as in completely wrapped with clear plastic but they do have a plastic tape seal holding the box shut.


Another reason NOT TO BUY, if you cannot inspect the filter without tearing a security seal, then you have to buy first then return when it if found to be defective, which seems to be alot of the XG filters lately!!!!!!!!!!!1




Opening a taped filter box is not like opening a box of sealed cookies. I have no problem cutting the tape with my pocket knife to inspect a filter before I buy it. I think the more expensive filters have taped boxes to lessen theft but it doesn't work very well as I've seen several OCOD filters in Ultra boxes and even a few in some Bosch boxes. Gotta love them thieving Walmartians.
 
Perhaps they know more than we think. There has been extensive work over the last hundred or so years on shapes of holes to minimize pressure drops and increase flows. A sharp, square, hole has larger resistance to flow than one with an extended length. Is it POSSIBLE that this is an improvement? Someone needs to take a before and after good close up picture of the same spot inside the center tube. Not me though. I see the new darling of bitog may be the e-core, if they still are making them after bankruptcy. It's time for a new favorite anyway.

there are some tat are already opened and when i buy one i make sure i open the box to check its contents...Lucky i did because if i did not do it there i would have to return it anyway.

Its risk anslysis. Why use a filter that wasn't finished correctly and leaves burrs to potentially come off into the oil stream to wreck you motor. Good ole common sense is all
