I was at Wallyworld the other day and decided to look inside a Fram Toughguard. Wow. They must have changed the design, at least for my application. The center tube was much much beefier with a lot more outlet holes - and they were bigger than before. The inlet holes were bigger as well. The whole thing felt meaty - heaviest filter I've seen for my application. The can seemed extra thick - I couldn't deform it with my hands what-so-ever. There was a lot of black glue visible at the bottom holding the cardboard endcaps to the center tube, but it didn't look sloppy like the glue drained out everywhere during assembly.

Hmmmmmmmmmm, for $4.50, I think I might try one.

The regular Extraguard filter still looked [censored] with a very thin center tube lacking in outlet holes - and the holes were tiny.

I was comparing them the other day to the Mobil 1 version for the Ford 3.0L and Chrysler 3.7L. The Mobil 1 filter feels as if it weighs twice as much. But both seemed to be well made.

I used them for years not knowing what could happen until I joined BITOG. Nothing ever happened but I did stop using them.

I am not super picky about oil filters though the orange can Fram is not on my list ihave cut apart the T.G. Frams and they are better then the orange can Fram.

NOBODY ever buys the TG filters that fit my VW at W-M (TG2870A). The boxes are always dusty, and look like they've been on the shelf for years. My guess is that anybody that uses Frams for a vehicle like mine, probably goes for the Orange Death Can. Even if the TG filters have gotten "better", chances are it will be years before I ever see one on the shelf.

The ToughGuard is "darn" good filtration and should be considered at the right price.

Every filter has its trade-offs but this one, at least on filtration, is right up near the top.

the toughguard filters are exactly the same as the regular orange can filters. the only diffrence is there is a metal screen over the bypass valve.

unless they re-designed it recently like the original poster said?

TG also has a silicone ADBV, where the orange can uses nitrile.

agree on the filter media- appears at least twice as strog as anyhting else from Fram Purolator or Bosch.
Really looks like a good filter, but current prices at WMT are closer to 7 bucks, not 4.50

I think in Grease's study (Tim Schultz from PALL did the bubble testing) even the advanced medias from Fram were inferior in filtering ability. Even the XG ..although intensely reinforced, appeared to have a more common filtering ability.

They're $4.50 in my application!

So if one were to get the oil specials at Autozone where they make you take a ToughGuard, that would be a good thing? I have been avoiding it because I really don't like Frams from what I've read, but they have good deals on the oil.

I think it depends on your particular application. The Toughguard for my application is different from what it used to look like. It looks better now.
