Fram PH16 Unknown Mileage Cut Open

This filter was on the 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan. I got a new filter cutter so I decided to cut open what I had left that was dripping. This was installed before the 51515 I cut open. This was sitting in the pan for at least two years. The car used to have a K&N Filter on it. But I have replaced it with a Wix Air Filter. Must be the reason why there's so much sludge under the valve covers and dirt trapped in the filter media.

Yeah nothing but sludge in this car. I had a thread posted up in the Maintenance forum and I posted a picture what was underneath the valve cover when I was changing the front VC gasket. At least the indy shop that did this didn't use a Purolator, I would of been screwed.

It was one of the factors. Not saying it caused all of it. The vehicle occasionally drives on dusty roads. Assuming the K&N filter isn't a great choice for filter efficiency.

I know there is a good bit of K&N hate and there may be some good reasons for it, but I know I have them on 2 of my cars one for 25k miles and the other for around 100k and they have been great IMO. no dirt trapped in the oil filters and certainly no sludge..

Ugh, that thing took a beating. That is one of the "old" PH16's, the newer ones have a few more pleats and better spacing.

I think the member on here "Run" posted a newer style PH16.

If they took any pleats away from the old PH16 or PH8A there would be none!

That element looks rough-deserves a Wix or at least a MC FL-400S, that's worse than any I've seen.

My concern on those fiber-ended filters (especially the longer ones w/less pleats) is the tendency to bend & distort all over, affecting the ability to seal the ends. That's why I've only run Extended Guards in small sizes, the bigger ones seem to bend & distort, esp. in winter with short-tripping.

Even if it does bend on the edges, it only needs 1/8" on the center tube to seal and when assembled and under tension, I believe that it does fully seal.

My last Wix 51515 is on it now and I bought a 6 Napa Proselects 21515s to run short OCIs. FYI this vehicle has 263K KM. It was bought two years ago and only about 2-3k was put on it.

Wow! That thing has been through the ringer! Sludgebomb is right. Amazingly, the filter seems to have held up well to it and looks to have done it's job at holding the gunk.

Oil filters do not cause sludge in an engine. Poor maintenance is a much more likely contributor.
