The three 7317 Fram filters you can find almost anywhere, the Extra Guard, Tough Guard, and Ultra Synthetic, appear to be getting the Champion Labs 13-hole baseplate, dome end yellow dot matrix date code, and e-core design. Unfortunately, the Ultra Synthetic does not get the old wire backing back.

All of these were purchased in 2024/2025, with the new design all being found at my local Wal-Mart. Info dump time:

# - Design - Filter Date Code - Box Date Code

Fram Extra Guard PH7317 oil filters:
1 - Fram Design - A41763 - 5/24 (1)
2 - Fram Design - A42623 - 8/24 (1)
3 - Champ Design - 24317AB16:07 - 10/24 (4)

Fram Tough Guard TG7317 oil filters:
1 - Fram Design - A41761 - 4/24 (4)
2 - Champ Design - 25046AB18:30 - 1/25 (2)

Fram Ultra Synthetic XG7317 oil filters:
1 - Fram Design - A41771 - 4/24 (3)
2 - Champ Design - 25070AB23:33 - 1/25 (1)

I have checked a few other part numbers but not all of them move off the shelf as fast as the 7317s do, so it may be a while before it's clear that the whole part number range is going this route or just some.

I covered some of this year's oil filter news in a YouTube video, but all the information is already available on this forum as of this post.

Do you think this is a temporary change or further consolidation?

Doubt it ever will. The Fram Endurance was kind of the replacement for the OG Ultra, but as most know is/was only sold at Walmart. Fram should have put the fiber leaf spring seal on the Endurance (or at least figure out how to stamp smooth leaf springs again) and marketed it in other stores/sources beside Walmart.

The XG2 I bought still had the great stainless wire backing, but media was the new stuff. Probably because this filter gets used on hard running bigger engines, trucks, etc. I posted pics of it. So what’s wrong with that? Nothing, it’s as good as the old XG2, except bypass leakage and poor quality control, dirty, etc, on my sample only.

"Enshittification, also known as crapification or platform decay, is a term for the inevitable decline in quality of a product or service, especially online, as it is driven by the pursuit of profit and growth. This process typically involves a gradual shift from providing a high-quality user experience to prioritizing features that increase monetization, often at the expense of user satisfaction. "

PH7317 came in today. And it looks exactly the same as XG7317 I’ve received a month ago that was a new design. Look like the same filters, just 2.5x cost difference

I haven’t cut them open, but it does look exactly the same - color, texture etc. I might be wrong of course, just judging by the looks

that will be interesting to check.. . Fram states that the ultra is dual layer synthetic so it should be white at least on the other side from your viewpoint afaik.

These are not e-core but the media should be the same:

Thanks for the great post.

Just a few quick questions.

Would Champ labs in current day be inferior to Fram in current day in terms of quality?

Is the efficiency of the Champ Labs made Fram Ultra still listed on the box as 99% @ 20 microns?

Would it be possible to perform the flashlight test on the new Fram PH7317 and XG7317 made by Champ labs to see if they still have the leaf spring leak?

Thanks

They say dual layer synthetic blend ... it's not full synthetic anymore.
