Good afternoon all,
The Mother-in-Law moved in with us recently (health issues) and I inherited taking care of her car - a 2004 Suzuki Aerio AWD.
This morning we're headed to Walmart so I ask when was the last time she had her oil changed. She couldn't remember, but she was sure it was more than a year ago.
So I pick up a 5qt jug of Valvoline ($5 with K-mart matching coupon, yeah!) and a Purolator filter.
Whatever oil was in there...I'll give it credit. I expected liquid sludge...and while it was black...it didn't flow all that poorly. Some sludge visible thru the fill port...but not bad at all.
Off comes the filter...Fram Extra Guard Pro PH4386. And its clear that the ADBV has failed as the oil came out freely without poking a hole in the can...which would explain the start-up rattle.
Nothing remarkable here. While the ADBV was failed...I didn't see any cracking or deterioration in the ADBV that would explain why. The ADBV sealing surface looked okay. The cardboard ends are still firmly glued to the pleats.
So...not too bad...actually looks pretty good.
A little distortion in a couple of the pleats...not too bad...
Up to this point...I was firmly in the Fram = Orange Can O' Death camp. Now...after seeing this filter...I'm not too sure... Still...I've good luck with Purolator, Wix, and NAPA Gold so I don't see any reason to change...
thanks much,
ben
