I really dont think that a carefull inspection was even needed. It looks like a no brainer....Vandalism...But anyways we are up to six pages on this NO topic...

Chill out you Fram-O-Death lovers,
he had a Major incident with a filter and came here for help,i'm sure he didnt plan this he could have blown his motor. Look at that oil trail.

Actually it was a friends car. They left it here for troubleshooting. My dad was just leaving with it for a test drive when that happened... Thank god we caught it because this owner would have driven it not knowing...

Looks to me like some kind of Covert Operation or a Ninja Attack, definitely not a factory defect.
Common sense tells me that anything that was big enough to do this to an oil filter, could NOT go unnoticed by the driver.
The bang, thump, whack that accompanied "The FRAM Disaster" would have been significant, and any driver that holds a valid drivers license should have been able to hear the impact, and then been intelligent enough to inform another person that "I ran over something".................Hmmmmmmmmmmm

The friend dropped of the car for service... All was fine no oil in the driveway at all, car was locked over night. Went to take it on a test drive and bam, oil everywhere...

The car was driven in the driveway and shut off leaving no trail of oil.

The next morning, your father unlocked it and drove off only to be greeted with the oil light or low reading on the oil?
Hard to figure any likely explanation. Never happen to me when I ran Frams.

I still think vandals. Something popped that hole from the outside in, looks like an awl, or a nail hole. JMO
I dunno... Mess still in the driveway/road even after pressure washing along with degreaser... What a mess...
I forgot to put an oil sending unit back in a car many years ago. Phone call distraction, anyway, started it up and dumped at least 3 qts of oil maybe more. What a mess, I thought my father was going to kill me, glad it was in the street and not the driveway. Clean up took a long time!
If the car was locked and has an inside hood latch, the vandal would have had to have crawled under and reached up over the oil filter to puncture it. I do admit the world is full of crazies, but wonder about that. I still think it looks like it was punctured from outside. As far as how, not even a good guess.

I agree that it definitely looks like a puncture from the outside. If it was an inward-out exit hole,it`d be very jagged with the ruptured metal branching outward.
I've been ice picking my horizontal and near horizontally installed oil filters for years. It doesn't much matter what color they are they are no match for a sharp awl.
Intentionally hitting one that close to the engine and only once would seem to be in the realm of one weird vandal.
Oil spills like that clean up much better with a absorbent clay material, like kitty litter. Water just sends the mess to somewhere else. Get some clay and grind it into what is left of the mess and let it sit for a day or two if no rain in the forecast. Swept up and properly disposed of the oil won't end up anywhere else. Most places that take oil waste will take the clay for disposal.

Consider it was pointing up, seems next to impossible to come from road. As per the masses, looks like an intentional hole from a nail or awl.

someone unscrewed the oil filter on you....they don't just unscrew themselves...
