FRAM Disaster... WHAT A MESS!

The filter is located in the front of the engine, and the car sits pretty low to the ground. My dad said that it would have to have been done with the hood open because the hole was pointing up.
Here is a picture of a similar engine to make it easier to understand...
Would have been facing the distributor on top...
Maybe someone did it at night... Doors should have been locked.
We live in a rural area and know all our neighbors quite well so I'm not sure...
I will be checking my brakes thoroughly before leaving the driveway and checking for puddles after this though...

same here. I've seen, and actually had, a pin hole in an oil filter from a rock or other debris hitting it, but that looks too intentional to be coincidence.
By any chance, did the OP manage to see where the hole was facing before removing the filter? If it was pointed down, then no doubt somebody got under and punched it with something.

Anyway, think of all the junk on the road we run over without ever knowing about it because it isn't sticking upright enough to get a flat tire or something....I think it's a nail.

Seriously though--that's freaky.
not that I carefully look over every square inch of a new oil filter, but don't you think somebody installing it would have either felt it or seen it while screwing it onto the engine?
I will tell you this much, up under the hood it made one hellf of a mess.

Yeah but there is no scrapping of the paint around the hole or indentation where it was punctured. The filter is all banged up because my dad used big Channel lock pliers to get it off. The hole is also not perfectly round.

Maybe someone worked on the car and dropped a tool or something that hit the top of the filter and punched a hole?
I dunno... I went out to cut the filter open and my dad had already thrown it out and now there is saw dust and other junk on it...
Oh well... Nasty mess to say the least!

Cut it open anyways, you'll be able to see if the metal curls in from the inside view.

happened at my work 8 years ago. one employee unscrewed another employees oil filter just enough to leak alot of oil. the guy got 15 min down the highway and locked up the motor (4.2L jeep). the guy who owned the 4.2L isn't real mechanical so he didn't notice a thing until it was too late. the one that vandilized the jeep was paying the jeep owner back for sleeping with his wife.
but in your case on the ph16 i thing it looks like vandalism or road debris! mike
