Check these pictures out... Fram filter has a hole in the side, my dad thinks from a Nail, but I think because it's a FRAM defect or poor QA. Whatever it was it made a mess.

Hopefully the engine survives because I don't think it was run too long with lack of oil and because you can see lots of oil in the driveway.

It made quite the mess of the engine area, and the driveway.

Judge for yourself...

My dad is pressure washing the driveway as we speak... On another note if you look at the hole, it's not round so

I think it was a defect in the sidewall that gave way. Your thoughts?

Yeah but there is no scrapping of the paint around the hole or indentation where it was punctured. The filter is all banged up because my dad used big Channel lock pliers to get it off. The hole is also not perfectly round.

Could this be from road debris?

I agree. Can't imagine any manufacturing defect that could bash a can from the outside and then punch a nail-hole in it.

I'm guessing the owner drove over a short length of 2x4 with a nail sticking out. The tire then kicked it up into the oil filter.

Can you tell if any metal around the hole is curled slightly inward- I'd think that would be the clue for a puncture. If the metal is just simply *missing* and the edges of the hole are sharp, then it might be a thin spot that gave way. Even then I think I'd expect to see maybe a little outward curling, but if it were an abrupt thinning of the metal relative to what's around it, I suppose it could have just blown out without leaving much curling.

Years ago a guy retired from my office. He always said that he couldn't wait to retire and when he did he was going to drive over his alarm clock. So he did. His wife watched from the house. Think he put a board over it to prevent puncturing the tire. When he drove over it the clock exploded sending parts everwhere. That evening one the way to his retirement party the oil light came on. Apparently a piece of the alarm clock punctured the oil filter.

I agree with 440magnum-If there is no curved metel, the fram gave way.

What is a BITOGers father doing with a fram anyway?

:)

You couldn't pry cheap conventional oil and Fram filters from my dads hands... Not that he thinks they are good quality, just that they get the job done and he has never seen a problem using them so why start now.

I will see if I feel up to cutting the filter open later to look as it from the other side...

"I would suspect vandalism. Looks like a punch hole to me."

+1, looks like someone used a spring loaded metal punch. A manufacturing defect would have pushed inside out. Nail seems like a one in a billion!

I agree with vandalism. Is the filter located in a location where it would be easy to reach in the wheel well with a spring loaded metal punch?

Check if the easiest place to get on the filter is by the threads. If so, now you've got a whodunnit on your hands.

lol!!! they do that at the factory!!!

sure does look strange - c'mon, go cut it open now! the suspense is killing us!
it appears that this happened in the driveway? did he tick off some squirrels?

It looks to me like the edges turn in. I took a punch and knocked a few holes in a bean can. They look about the same. Follow the oil trail back to where it happened and I wouldn't be surprised to see some debris on the road.

OF COURSE it happens to somebody on BITOG!

The big dent would have been noticed when it was put on.

Where EXACTLY did the engine start leaking oil at?

How long after the oil filter was put on did it start leaking?

Wow.
